Music Board Rules

#1 Post by avwolf »

Let's lay down a few reasonable ground rules:
  • All the General Forum Rules Apply
Yeah, this is a cool place to post about music, but there's no excuse for using that as a way to bypass the forum's rules. Our rules and guidelines exist for reasons, usually good reasons, even. Please continue to abide by the rules. Most of what follows is really just restating those rules for this situation.
  • Label the Work
Music is extremely powerful, and often deals with a lot of personal issues and struggles. That's awesome. But sometimes people are listening to this music at work, or have their own feelings regarding different topics. If you're going to post music with strong language or mature themes, you must clearly the label the post (and potentially the thread) appropriately.
  • Credit Where Credit is Due
Musicians work pretty hard on what they do. We love it when you post your own work here, that's just the best. But sometimes we need to take inspiration from or discuss the work done by others. Whenever possible, give credit where credit is due; whether that's to original artists that you're sampling, or the artists that you're discussing. When linking to work that's not your own, try to link to "official" versions of songs and music videos when possible; that way we're giving the most eyeballs to the original artists.
  • Keep Criticism Constructive
Music is often very personal and a lot of people invest their emotions into songs. It's okay to be critical of a piece of music -- or even a musician -- but remember to be respectful in your criticism. If you don't like that a musical artist has a history of drug use, it's okay to point out your differences with that lifestyle, but it's not okay to call them "subhuman trash who don't deserve a listen to." If a song sounds like somebody taped a blown microphone to a washing machine to you, it's okay to say that it's not really to your taste, but it's not okay to say "this song and everything in its genre is just senseless noise that even babies and idiots couldn't get into." Respect the fact that other people might not share your opinion, and that doesn't make either of you "stupid." Our own musicians probably want constructive criticism to help polish their craft; just like the other artists on this board, but we need to keep our criticism respectful and constructive, even when we don't like the sounds we're hearing.
Expect some shifts and changes to these rules as we hammer out the details in the board and please bear with us while we all figure this out together. Please don't hesitate to contact one of the moderators if you need help with anything or have any questions.

Welcome to the Music Board!
