That entire article was pretty fascinating.dartvader48 wrote:Ever wonder why i like foxes so much?

Re: General chat thread
Has anyone else noticed that memes tend to only he funny to some people?
Yet they are CONSTANTLY. used by people who think they are funny, even when the audience they are being used on clearly won't appreciate them? Its like reading an audience is a dead artb despite being essential for comedy.

Re: General chat thread
A meme is by nature only going to be funny to some people - Any memetic idea will spread to some people and not to others. Why they're spread is a whole slew of psychological reasons that more or less come down to a few things.
- Memetic ideas are catchy so you want to share them
- Depending on the size of the meme, you expect people to know it, so it serves as an in-joke or reference humour (which serves as group confirmation)
- Subtle manipulations on the meme improve its chances to spread and also increase its volume
Memes are intrinsic in actual comedy too, although their application is not the youtube/reddit/4chan conception of a meme. Likewise, anyone who tells jokes exclusively in memes isn't trying to be a comedian. They're just spreading the meme.

And for those of us who never used 4chan or Redit, these will have a very different tone than for those who did.

Re: General chat thread
I guess? I get the feeling you're thinking about a very specific set of memes, because you're exposed to memetic ideas every single day and you definitely repeat them. Everyone does. That includes even stuff like jingles or in-jokes or figures of speech like "Birds of a feather flock together", etc.
Re: General chat thread
Some, but far fewer than the average person. I actually find most memetic devices aggravating. Jingles are annoying, most in-jokes are only ok if I even catch them (usually it's just "I'm missing something here, aren't I?"), and colloquialism would be the largest group for me. While I use them, they are by no means intended as the viral idea that a true meme is.

Re: General chat thread
Fair enough. (Although a meme is memetic regardless of whether it's used in a deliberately viral fashion or not.)

Actually, buoyancy is the force on an object with regards to how much weight of water that object is displacing. Fresh water that would be in a bathtub is roughly 0.9965 gram per cubic centimeter (at about 27 C) in terms of density, while salt water from the ocean is denser at about 1.027 gram per cubic centimeter. Because salt water is denser, that means things can float better in it.In the Panel Shuffle Thread, Lightice wrote:It's not a matter of water, but buoyancy of the floating object. Things don't float any easier in the ocean than they do in a bathtub.ThunderVolt wrote: Also, anything that is extremely heavy can float as long as there is enough water below it.
A cubic centimeter of fresh water then weighs:
(0.0009965 kg) x (9.81 m/s2) = 0.009776 [kg m/s2]
Which is about 0.0098 Newtons.
And a cubic centimeter of salt water is about 0.0101 Newtons.
And going from cubic centimeter of volume, to cubic meter of volume, would just increase those answers by a magnitude of 3 in Newtons.
This Newton force being the buoyancy force applied on any object making that much displacement of water. So a cubic centimeter block would displace that much water. This displacement would have the respective force applied depending on if it was in fresh or salt water.
Something would be about 3% more buoyant in salt water, than in fresh water. So objects do float easier in salt water than in fresh water.

Re: General chat thread
to add to this sciencing, it's based on the differences in density between the object and the liquid. The larger the difference (as long as the object is less dense), the easier it is for the object to float. Take people for example, we float, we are already less dense than fresh water. Salt water is more dense then fresh water, therefore it's easier to float in salt water. That being said, you could theoretically find an object that sinks in fresh water, but floats in salt water.TinyVoices wrote:Actually, buoyancy is the force on an object with regards to how much weight of water that object is displacing. Re: General chat thread
indeed, while you need to breathe in large amount air to fill your lung to float on fresh water, you can literally just breathe normally and still float on the ocean
of course, unless you are a rock that can type and move.
