As the door was slammed open and the leading wolf declared that "This town has been reclaimed for its rightful owners, the wolves!" was shouted, Griswald had already begun to move. Taking one step forward he smashed his fist into Alice's side of the table with enough force to catapult the objects on the table upwards into the air. Among them, the knife that John had been using earlier to peel and cut fruit which was left behind amidst the confusion behind their mysterious watcher and the wolf raid. Snatching the knife out of the air with speed that left his arm a blur, Griswald spun around and threw the blade with all his might; the silver streak aimed straight at the throat of the lead wolf. Even if the knife hit hilt first, it was still striking with enough force to seriously wind most beings.

Completing his spin, Griswald's turned to face the wolves; his steel helm leaving no expression or features to be distinguished. The air around him was still and without fear, fury, or anticipation. In dead silence, he drew his two swords in a backwards grip before flipping the two blades forward ending with their tips pointed at the ground in front of him. With a well practiced motion he slashed a line in the ground in front of him, taking aim to avoid injuring anyone fatally, before stepping over it. Gleaming blades held in each hand with neither head nor back bowed, Griswald's cold steeled presence and mark in the ground exuded a simple ultimatum: 'none may pass unless I allow it'.

Meanwhile, behind him, Alice jumped to her feet as she snapped her helmet on. Drawing her sword with her off hand, she waved in the general direction of the rear exits and other exit points.

"Everyone!" Alice shouted, voice reverberating above the noise of the inn as magical energy began to flow and ebb around her. "Now is not the time to be stumbling around inside the inn! Now is the time to get out of it! They have yet to barricade the rear and windows! Move, now!"

Turning to the rest of the table's occupants she gave each of them a quick glance as she spoke. "I will not fault you for wannting to leave with them but Sir Riles and I will hold them off for as long as it is possible for us to do so without losing our lives as well. But I must ask that those of you who are capable of doing so to at least consider standing with me until those that can not protect themselves have escaped or left."

Switching her attention away from the other table occupants before she could receive their answer, Alice directed her focus to the silent wall of steel covering her. Quietly, she placed her free hand on the cape covered back of the knight softly and felt the unyielding and scratched steel beneath the cloth.

"Sir Riles." Alice murmured softly, the knight standing as still as a statue as he continued to stare down the wolves. "I trust that you will not fail in protecting me but I must ask that you extend your hand to as many of these folk as possible. They deserve better than this."

The armour under her hand straightened as Riles squared his shoulders to present an even larger and, hopefully, more intimidating figure; a movement of acceptance or agreement. Alice smiled as she let go of his back and took a ready stance slightly to the side and behind him.

"Thank you."

Elizabeth would've been content to ignore the wolf and continue drinking, but that idea disappeared as quickly as her drink. Sent flying by Griswald's table-punching, it emptied its contents over several confused and scared patrons before clattering against the far wall of the inn.

Before the knife left Griswald's hand, Eliza was up with her bow in hand, just nocking an arrow. Before the knife struck its target her arrow had already left the bow, speeding towards the same wolf. Although it was aimed for his head.

For a brief moment she considered leaving the girl and her armored companion. Then Elizabeth saw the girl's stance. Drawing her own sword, she kept her bow handy and moved to the girl's left. As she passed, Eliza used her bow to quickly adjust the girl's stance and footing, although not forcibly. After falling in line, she took much the same stance as she had just made the girl take, albeit more relaxed and with only one hand on her sword.

Miranda considered just running with the rest of the citizens...But the 3 or so against many made her nervous about their safety. Whether she wanted to or not, she wasn't about to just let them take on that many on their own. At least there, her 'curse' could at least be helpful. She walked up on the male knight's right.

She soon spoke softly. "W-we may not know eachother, but please leave covering your backs to me." she said, loosening the bandages on her arms a bit to make casting a bit easier.

She tied the bandages up with just enough cloth to cover what was hidden beneath. She took a deep breath as she was readying her massive well of magic for defensive spells instead of attack type. She loosened her robe as well to give her breathing room as her light blue eyes almost seemed to glow just slightly as she was doing the mage equivalent of 'taking a stance', just...without taking a stance. She was instead preparing a few choice spells to cover them with, as she wasn't confident in her ability to fling offensive spells without causing collateral damage.

The leading wolf staggered back as Griswald’s blade plunged deep into its throat. The once intimating and brave wolf now clung at his neck, trying desperately to stop the blood flow. His expression had completely changed; his eyes wide and teary. He was afraid. While it felt an eternity, the wolf didn't suffer long. Elizabeth’s arrow pierced through the canine’s eye, ending his life before his body even hit the ground.

The second wolf to enter stood only a few feet from his fallen companion. “Garr..” he muttered, sorrow drenching his voice. The wolf gripped his spear before turning back to the heroines and their steel body guard, rage burning in his eyes “You’ll pay for that with your lives you hairless apes!!” he shouted once more in keidran and six more wolves poured into the room, forming into a standard battle line.

Two stood in the front; they were well armoured and held short swords with their shields raised. On each of their flanks stood two hulking beast, covered in tribal warrior paintings and barring large intimating weapons, one a great sword the other a war hammer. Yet neither wore any armour.

Coming up the rear stood a crossbowman and a wolfish mage. The crossbowman stood ready, weapon primed and aimed toward Elizabeth. The mage readied his staff, chanting in a mystic language as both the mana crystals around his neck and his eyes began to glow an intense bright blue.

In the centre stood the second wolf, smiling cruelly. “<Take the archer and swordswoman alive! Aries would want to make them his personal slaves!>” He took on step forward, his spear raised and pointed toward the tavern’s defenders. “<Kill the rest!>”

With that the two larger wolves charged at Griswald, while the smaller ones ran past honing in on Alice’s position.

The crossbowman discharged his bolt, now speeding toward Elizabeth’s chest.

The mage chanted once more in keidran as a large ball of flame massed at the tip of his staff. “Ignititious!” he screamed as the ball took flight, now heading for toward Miranda.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Griswald gave no answer to the wolf's challenge or even any indication that he had noticed the wolf speaking. Instead he put a single foot back as the four wolves charged. With Alice only slightly to the left and behind him, there was simply no way to close in on her without ending up in reach of Griswald and his blades, a fact that he abused as soon as the small ones closed in ahead of the larger ones.

Once they were within three feet of Griswald the two lighter and smaller wolves found their charge answered by two screaming arcs of silver as he slashed each of his swords at them diagonally downwards, crouching down to do so, aiming to cut each of them from the shoulder closest to him to the hip away from him. To continue the charge without altering position was to rush into the path of each of these silver arcs. The only way to advance without being cut was to lean forward so much that they would be doubled over and expose their necks and back. The only safety was to the back or sides, exposing themselves either to the full fury of being in front of Griswald, or to be far out of reach of the other light wolf where they could be picked off by the ranger or mage behind him.

Crouching, with his swords ready at his side and one foot behind him, Griswald moved into the next step of his attack without hesitation or pause. Rather than dodge to the sides or backwards, he sprung forward. The coiled armored muscles of his body propelled his body forward faster than one would expect or believe as he cleared the short distance, less than six feet, in the blink of an eye. Any poor unfortunate soul, namely if either of the smaller Wolves, decided to be in front of him then they were simply trampled or bowled over as six and a half feet of metal and muscle decided to advance without hesitation.

With the momentum of his heavy body, the strength of his muscles, and the bonus to power his crouching start gave him, Griswald aimed his blades at the center of each of the larger wolf's chest and stabbed his swords forward with enough force to skewer an armored man. But he did not stop here, even if his attack failed to score a hit. Instead, he let his momentum carry him forward and closed the distance until the larger wolves were less than one of their arms reach from him, stepping right into the dead zones of their larger weapons.

Although able to generate a stronger blow than a comparative one handed weapon wielded by the same person, larger weapons such as great swords and war hammers required space and time to swing and generate the force that made them great weapons. Now within their arm's reach Griswald denied them the space required to use their weapons properly and forced them to give either weak blows that opened them up to counterattacks, to attempt to engage him with poorly controlled one handed blows, or a fist. However, wielding two one handed weapons and clad in heavy steel and chain, he suffered none of their difficulties in this range. Griswald focused mostly on the warhammer wielding wolf, ensuring to keep at least the targets of his attack between him and the other as he let loose a rain of blows from his fist, slashes from the edges of his blade, and jabs with the point of his sword. He took special care to aim an attack or two at the shaft of the warhammer near the head in an attempt to sever it and ruin the weapon beyond use, forcing the wolf to straight hand to hand combat.

As Griswald proceeded to begin his attack Elizabeth was also moving. First of all if any of the smaller wolves decided to actually continue the advance, they would find that ducking down so low and exposing your neck and back would prove to be a terrible idea as even Alice could easily sink her sword into such an easy target, never mind the archer and mage right beside her. Once that was over she took care to stay in line with the mage and archer, sword up front and ready to intercept anyone who might try to advance past Griswald. At this point, she was seriously hoping that there would be no more than one or two, since she still had yet to make much progress on her combat lessons but desperate times called for desperate measures.

Sometime between the second wolf entering and starting his [censored], Elizabeth drew three arrows from within her cloak, keeping them in her sword hand. She tensed when the crossbowman entered, but made no movements other than a shift in footing.

She briefly scanned the other combatants, figuring the wall of steel to her right could handle most of them. Maybe not all at once, but there was more than just her and the imposing suit of armor on their side. The mage might be a problem, but Eliza was pretty sure they had a mage on their side as well. If not, she could do double-duty as one, but an arrow would work just as well on the mage regardless.

As awkward as it was, Elizabeth readied her bow and drew back one of the arrows, keeping the other two as well as her sword in hand. Her bow was trained on the crossbowman at the back. While it couldn't match the strength of a crossbow, she could easily match or exceed the accuracy. And that was what mattered.

When the crossbowman released his bolt, Eliza loosed her arrow, with the arrow aimed to intercept the bolt mid-flight. She stepped to the side immediately after loosing, nocking another arrow, drawing, and loosing. This arrow was aimed for the crossbowman's chest.

Miranda braced herself as she watched the fireball approach. She could easily deflect it, but this was a wooded area with a lot of potential collateral damage. Flinging it to her left would hit the Archer and Swordswoman next to her, flinging it to the right would set the woods on fire. Down would be dangerous. Her only choice was to fling it skywards, and so she did.

Miranda's eyes barely glowed at all, if any, as she put a small magic shield around her palm and slapped the ball of fire skywards like a volleyball before making sure it wouldn't come back down. She created a magic arrow and it flew straight into the fireball to make it explode in the sky like fireworks.

She quickly followed up by flinging two small potency, for her, magic arrows at the mage to test his defensive knowledge. She knew this from books that Keidran don't have a natural magic battery and have to use those mana stones as external power sources. So even if this mage's defensive game was good, she could barrage him and wear him down. If not...Well, less energy expended by her.

Griswald

The two smaller wolves, either overly confident in themselves or grossly underestimating the knight still charged forward blindly, assuming they’d be able to dodge any slow, sluggish movements that the colossus could make. They were gravely mistaken.

Both wolves were thrown vilolently either side by the force of Griswald’s strikes. The one on Griswald’s left was carved clean through, is blood splattering across the giant’s armour as he let out a final agonised howl as he flew through the air, crashing into a nearby table. The second survived the initial blow thanks solely to his armour; he was still sent air born until he collided with one of the inn’s walls with enough force to bend the wooden supports outward. Though alive, the wolf was left dazed, winded and in a great deal of pain.

Any poor unfortunate soul decided to be in front of him then they were simply trampled or bowled over as six and a half feet of metal and muscle decided to advance without hesitation.

The larger wolf wielding the hammer was run through by Grizwald’s blade, while the second had parried Grizwald’s blade with the flat of the broad sword; letting it pass by harmlessly. As Grizwald turned to focus on the survivor, he felt his right blade was considerably heavier and unbalanced. His sword had become lodged deep inside the wolf’s corpse and Grizwald didn’t have enough time to properly retrieve it and fight off the second wolf at the same time. Untimately, Grizwald was forced to grudgingly discard his second blade and return to the battle at hand.

Although able to generate a stronger blow than a comparative one handed weapon wielded by the same person, larger weapons such as great swords and war hammers required space and time to swing and generate the force that made them great weapons. Now within their arm's reach Griswald denied them the space required to use their weapons properly and forced them to give either weak blows that opened them up to counterattacks, to attempt to engage him with poorly controlled one handed blows, or a fist..

The sword wilding wolf knew this all too well, opting for a more defensive stance as the two circled each other. To make any wild swings would leave the wolf wide open for an attack, so instead he held the blade vertically using both hands to distribute the weight. The wolf planned to either parry Grizwald’s blows until he saw an opening to thrust forward, or somehow catch Grizwald with the blade’s hilt.

The pair locked eyes, neither wanting to make the first move. A single wrong move from either side here could result in an instant agonising death.

Elizabeth

When the crossbowman released his bolt, Eliza loosed her arrow, with the arrow aimed to intercept the bolt mid-flight. She stepped to the side immediately after loosing, nocking another arrow, drawing, and loosing. This arrow was aimed for the crossbowman's chest.

Eliza’s arrow met the crossbow’s bolt mid air, hitting it on a downward angle causing it to summersault wildly through the air as it passed by Eliza.

The wolf on the other hand wasn’t quite as lucky. Eliza’s second arrow found its mark, firmly lodging itself in the crossbow man’s shoulder; forcing him to drop his heavy weapon. With that, the now wounded wolf bolted for the exit, shoving past the lead wolf that still stood in the doorway. “<Coward!>” the lieutenant called out as the wounded wolf scurried off into the night.

Miranda

The fire ball shot straight up, bursting through the tavern’s weak straw and light timber roof. For a moment all of the combatants stopped for a moment to stare at the gargantuan burning hole in the roof. As the ball reached open sky, it burst open, showering the tavern’s flammable roof in magical flame and hot embers.

The wolfish mage stared back at the sorceress in disbelief, along with most of the people in the room, not sure what to do next. “<What have you done?!>” the mage called out toward the sorceress, distress in his voice. “<You’re going to burn the whole bloody building down around us!>”.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

As the fighting reached its peak, Bryers appeared sword in hand with John not too far behind him.

“They’ve got the front covered!” Bryers called out to John, pointing over to the four heroes making a stand against the raiders as he was trying to be heard over the sound of clashing steel and the screams of the wolves foolish enough to challenge Grizwald. “They can hold the wolves back without us, but it’ll all be for nothing if we can’t these people out!”

John nodded in agreement “There’s another way out!” he said “Through the kitchen there’s another door that leads out the back. I saw one of the cooks head out that way to toss out the scraps, it's our best bet..”

“What if the wolves are waiting for them out their?” Byres asked. “If they stay here they’ll be killed anyway, it’s their only chance!” John explained as he climbed up upon bar. “Everyone listen, there’s another way out!” John yelled as loud as he could as he frantically waved his arms around “Please, follow us!

As the words left his mouth a fiery eruption blasted a hole through the tavern’s roof, stunning the on lookers into silence for a moment. “We’ve got to go now!! Come on!
Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Griswald continued circling until he was by the body of the dead hammer wielding wolf. Taking a quick step back so that the body was in front of him while keeping the still living wolf in sight, Griswald leaned down pulled the blade out of the body and flicked off what blade was on the weapon. Now that he was properly reequipped Griswald took a few more steps until he was in front of the group of humans again. Both of his silver blades, each one covered in blood, gleamed red and silver in the fire of the building.

Without a noise from his massive steel frame, Griswald motioned at the surviving wolf with his head before motioning at the door behind the greatsword wielding wolf. It was obvious that neither could press an attack now without risking themselves but, to Griswald, there was only orders; and his orders were to protect Alice and, by extension of her authority, the evacuating villagers behind her. Their initial party of seven had been cut down to three living, one wounded and retreating, and four dead; three of which were because of him personally. There was no point of continuing this fight, not when the building was both on fire and literally collapsing around them.

If the greatsword wielding wolf choose to accept then that was it, they were allowed to leave and Griswald would leave with Alice. But if they choose to continue then he was prepared fight it out for as long as required, his body still not yet tired. However the next skirmish would not be any easier. His side now had an unoccupied ranger and two additional reinforcements if required. Restarting the fight was to simply charge into death now.

Alice, on the other hand, continued to motion at what few safe passages remained before preparing to leave as well. She ran to where the kitchen was but turned, waiting for Griswald to catch up.

"Hmm," Elizabeth hummed briefly, mentally chiding herself for missing the wolf's vital bits.

She ignored the fire, instead nocking the third arrow and drawing, homing in on the still-breathing armored wolf, loosing when she sighted on his head. Though currently incapacitated, he remained a threat that must be dealt with.

After loosing the last arrow, Elizabeth lowered her bow and faced the wolf mage. Setting a basic shield on herself with a quick gesture, Eliza started towards him. She stopped roughly in-line with Griswald; If the wolves kept fighting, she'd push forward to the mage and lieutenant while the armored giant dealt with the remaining brute of a wolf.

Miranda panicked a bit as she saw the roof light up. She had been so focused on the mage, she forgot she was indoors. Guess you can't learn situational awareness through books...

Regardless, she heard the wolf mage and argued back in Keidran, "<Shut it! You're the one who used a fire spell indoors!>" she yelled back as she charged a spell in her hand before shooting it at him. It was a plain ball of mana, and it was fairly large, mean't to blast the mage back rather than fatally wound him; it'd be smaller if she wanted to do that. Soon, she flung the beach ball sized bubble of pure magic at the mage before checking her allies.

She noticed the archer cast a shield on herself and got a good idea for what to do if the house were to fall down on top of them. Of course, she could just blast a wall out for herself, but that'd cause the Inn to tumble down faster around the other three. Regardless, she charged up some magic in case the inn tumbled down.

Griswald
The wolf took a step forward, only to be halted by a falling piece of burning timber which fell at his feet. The wolf glanced at the burning wood, then back to Griswald, reconsidering his next move. The wolf let out a muttered curse in high keidran; one without a human translation. He spat angrily at the ground before turning and heading for the exit. Grabbing his fallen comrade's hammer as he did.

Elizabeth

The armoured wolf let out a sharp yip in it's final moment as the arrow pierced his brain. Though unnecessary, it was a kindness to end his life quickly then to let him succumb to the flames.

Miranda "<You stupid girl. This wouldn't have happened if you had just laid down and di- Wait, what are you doing?>" The wolf's cruel words were cut short as fear gripped his mind at the sight of the rapidly growing blue orb growing in Miranda's hands. "<W-Wait a minute. No need to do anything hast->" the mage attempted to nervously plea as the ball of blue light sent him flying out a nearby window.

With the mage's dramatic exit, the last wolf had been cast out of the tavern. Leaving the survivors to attempt to find a way out of the inferno, which rage grew with every passing second.

John and Bryers
While the fighting had continued in the main dinning area, John and Bryers had been trying to help the many civilians who hadn't already fled escape.

John had was helping what seemed to be the last of the patrons leave as he heard the shattering of glass and whiling of the wolf mage. Seeing that the last of the wolves had been dealt with, John ran out to where Alice stood, calling out for the others to hurry to the exit. There was no sense hanging around to let the flames finish what the raiders had started.

While John was trying to organise the defender's retreat, Bryers was left standing at the kitchen's entrance. As he stood and waited for the the others, he heard a strange sound over the distant screams of the fleeing civilians and burning timber. Someone was crying.

Bryers followed the sound to a nearby table, finding a small fox cub clinging to the central post for dear life. She was a tiny thing, she couldn't be more than four, dressed in tattered pink dress, shivering with fear as tears rolled down her cheeks.

Bryers knelt down to the girl's level, offering his hand. "<Come on, darl. I know it's scary, but I need you to be brave, ok?>" he said trying to remain as calm as possible. The girl was hesitant at first, reaching out to grasp his hand with uncertainty before rushing to wrap her arms around the man's torso. Sobbing uncontrollably into his shoulder.

"<Come on. I'm going to get you out of here.>" Bryers said to the child, as he scooped her up and headed back to the kitchen. "John!" he called out "I think this is the last of them. Get those guys out of there!"

John nodded in acknowledgement "Please, there isn't much time!" John called out the group, his voice starting to stain under the affects of the smoke.

Bryers continued through the kitchen and out through the exit, carrying the small child with him. He only made it a few feet outside before the door way to collapse into a heap of burning timber and rubble, trapping him outside and the others in. Knowing there was nothing more that he could do for the defenders, Bryers began to jog slowly in the direction of the town centre "<Let's go find your parents, alright?>"
Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Alice nodded approvingly as Bryers went out of his way to rescue a child. It was good to see that some people still knew what needed to be done when required, a trait that seemed to be woefully underrepresented in the marauders attacking the town. Turning her attention back to Griswald and the surviving wolves, she sighed in relief as the last wolf decided that fighting to the death was pointless. That meant they could leave.

Unfortunately, as her attention was spent away from the door, the doorway collapsed. That is going to be a problem. Glancing about the ground floor, there was only the front door which the wolves just left from. That was not an optimal or perfect solution, retreating in the same direction as the enemy. However, there were the windows.

"Sir Riles!" Alice shouted, waving at the window closest to the back of the building where the rest of the clients had exited from. "Could you clear that window for us?"

Without a nod or other sign of acknowledgement, Griswald sheathed his blades and dashed towards the window. As he approached he did not stop or falter. Instead he leaped and smashed through the window, curling himself in the jump enough to clear the portal. Landing outside in a roll, he immediately sprung to his feet with hands on his blades.

Meanwhile, on the inside, Alice ran towards the newly opened window. "Come on people! Better choice than the front door!"

Elizabeth briefly considered knocking down a wall. Oh so very briefly. She considered this thought for such a brief instant that, were it possible, it would have broken the sound barrier as it left her mind.

The other options were to follow the Wolves out the main entrance, or try to clear a path through the collapsed kitchen exit. Neither were very appealing. As she considered the available escape routes, Eliza was racked with a sudden coughing fit that she forced short, regaining control of her breathing and ducking low.

Despite the fit of coughing, she had noticed the armored giant move to- And through, one of the windows. Right. The building had windows.

Was it the smoke or the adrenaline that made it so she failed to notice earlier? Regardless, she internally chastised herself for missing them, starting after Alice and the armored giant known as Sir Riles, staying low to avoid the smoke.
