"The" is a common first word for titles.
Using that as a speculative start point, it gave me 5th and 6th letters of the second word, and the eighth letter of the two longer versions.
That pointed to the longer versions being -er -est superlatives of the first one; looking at ten letter words matching the pattern ????ht?est gave only five results, of which three could be excluded due to duplicate letters that didn't match the pattern.
Of those two (doughtiest and naughtiest), doughtiest didn't leave letters that would allow the last four letter word to make contextual sense.
Naughtiest left the 'O' unused, which allowed a guess at the last word being wolf, which did make sense.
