I don't normally mention much about my personal life here, but this time l'd like to put it here.

I met my current boyfriend in early 2021 about 6 months after a failed first relationship that I never mentioned here. After months of dealing with heartbreak I had finally started to heal, and he helped a lot making me feel better.

This year has been the busiest in my life. I had never worked so much before. Up at dawn and coming back home a couple of hours before midnight. It made me hate everything about existing, but over the summer I realized we finally had a chance to meet. After almost 3 years of dating, we just needed to know. That was the one thing that kept me going for the latter half of the year. Ever present in my mind, because it was the only thing I could really look forward to.

When the grind was over, I flew halfway around the world. So many hours of travel and figuring my way around airports in countries I had never been to before. One of my connecting flights got delayed badly enough that I would have lost an entire day if I hadn't requested they change the booking and let me take a train instead. After figuring german out somewhat I made it to the right platform with my ticket and the last thing my boyfriend told me was to not move from the platform once I arrived so he could find me there. I got on the train with a dead phone because I lost my charger somewhere along the way (though I didn't have a European adapter anyway), and stood most of the way with my luggage because the train was so crowded. I got to the station about an hour and a half later. Knowing absolutely nothing about where to go I just moved out of people's way and stood to wait for him to find me. 10-15 minutes passed until a bench cleared up and I could sit, so I moved over and sat down to keep waiting. Seconds later, he was standing in front of me.

I'm really happy we met. I really am. I'm happy we got to share all those experiences couples have for the first time. Walks, dates, dining out, going shopping. We got to know each other better. Had happy moments, sad moments, and everything in between. I was really worried at first, but now I feel it wasn't a waste of time at all. I love him.

On our last full day together, we decided to go for dinner at a restaurant, because spending all day just running around in the kitchen seemed like a poor way of celebrating new year's eve with how little time we had. After dinner I suggested we go out to the castle square in the middle of the city to watch the fireworks as the countdown ended, but he had a different idea, and wanted us to go to his place outside of the city. We only had a couple hours left to make it there before midnight, so we started packing in a rush, making sure not to leave anything behind. We ran out the door once everything was packed and got to the bus stop just in time, but on the way the bus missed a stop by accident and we had to get off on the next one. After getting off we now had to rush all the way back to last stop and walk down to the underground station so we could take a train. The train arrived to a nearby town to his village, so now we needed to wait for the bus that would take us the rest of the way there. In typical German fashion, according to my boyfriend, the bus kept getting delayed. I convinced him to wait just a little longer, and it got there a few minutes later. This time we did get the bus to drop us off at the right stop, and we walked through his village. With 10 minutes to spare, we made it to his home and I searched for a countdown clock online. A minute before midnight we walked out to the balcony, and watched all the fireworks lighting up the sky above the village and every surrounding village in the horizon. That was the first time I could share a kiss with someone right as the clock reached midnight. I couldn't have asked for a better night. It's a moment I'll never forget.

The next day it was time for me to start making my way back home. He took me to the airport and went inside with me. After we dropped off my checked bag and since we had a couple of hours to spare, we went to have a look at the restaurants in the airport to have breakfast. When the time to get up came, that's when it really hit me. I know he was sad about knowing I eventually had to go back home, but I guess it just didn't click for me until the moment was there. That's when I had to fight back the tears. We discreetly kissed, and he walked me to the security checkpoint to get to the gates. We hugged, and I got in line still trying not to cry. A guy directing people told me to move to a different part of the line, which conveniently only had a metal railing separating the line from the area outside the checkpoint. My boyfriend walked over so we could hug for the last time, and then I had to keep moving along with the line. I looked back occasionally to see him standing there, just waiting for me to get past security. I placed my things on the conveyor belt with tears in my eyes, and when I was about to walk through the whole body scanner, I looked back one last time but he was gone. That's the first time I've ever cried over having to say goodbye to someone.

I'm home now, back to normal life. Took the rest of this week to recover from everything. Soon I'll start working out again, going to college, and looking for a job in my branch of engineering. I'm just still thinking about it all. It may have just happened, but I'm already excited for next time.

It was all worth it.
