I cannot imagine a quiet mechanic shop.

In any case I am kinda of curious what are Mr Bell's jams and tunes for rocking the saturday shift at the shop.

Also have some trust in the guys who maintain phpBB, it might not be the most full featured nor popular software out there. But oh boy it runs better than it has any right to*

Citation needed, indeed. We're supposed to be able to attach pictures and files as well, but that doesn't work either.

phpBB works very consistently, and what does work, works very well. It's a little clunky by nature, but it's built that way, and it's not a problem for this type of communication. In my mind, the format encourages more lengthy and complex conversations, rather than saying two or three words at a time. "It just works" isn't a bad way to put it.

Yeah. You could send 100k text messages in less time than it would take you to accumulate 10k posts in this forum. I mean, I believe there isn't a single person in this site with a post count that big. (Excluding search matches when you search for a user's posts, because it's very easy to accumulate posts in a place like the forum games. My post count is 399 but I've actually made over 1800 posts.)

You need a lot more server space if everyone attaches files to their posts. And that isn't a free service.
If it moves but shouldn't: Duct tape. If it doesn't move but should: WD-40. With a hammer everything fits, and if it still doesn't fit: bigger hammer. If it can't be fixed with a hammer it's an electrical problem.

I was not aware support for in server images/files was added at some point. PhpBB always had depend on third party services to store and retrieve those kind of stuff.
In fact I think one of the reasons facebook, twitter, and similar services overtook bulletin boards is precisely being able to attach files and pictures directly on their service, which they will then to the highest bidder, you do not need to go and subscribe to yet another website only to upload your photos and files, and risk them dissapearing when the company dies or decides it does not want to offer a free tier anymore. Moreover back when phpBB was created disk space was expensive commodity, but over the years storage prices have plummeted and are currently the cheapest part of running a website.
Yet the lack of direct multimedia content in bulletin boards promote conversation. As Mr Bellhead eloquently puts it: We tend to write more than 2-3 words. Most replies in a facebook post are people tagging their friends and or saying thing like "cool!"

To be fair, that was how I started here. Spent several months, replying to people with my reactions and whatnot. Got my first warning because of that, granted I earned it that time. And either way, that was back when we had comic threads over 10 pages long on the regular, devolving into existential and philosophical gibberish.

I remember that in every bulletin board I have been a part of there was, one way of the other. A rule against meaningless post. So commenting just: "ok" to a 10 page long reply thread was breaking the rules.
That being said it was also a point of contention even among moderation staff on the same forum. Some believing even very short comments can have substance and others even trying to impose a word minimum for a post.

Ah the good old days ™️

Also in all forums in have been the threads that went offtrack and evolved into philosophical discussions where the best
