Printable Toys (Crowd Sourcing Ideas)

#1 Post by BadFoMo »

A while ago, I came across an old Cut & Assemble book that had pieces for model houses which you would… well, cut out and assemble. After looking at that, I was thinking it would be interesting if we had something like that for new printable merchandise. After a little searching online, I came across Fat Dragon Games’ series of 3-D paper models to be used in role-playing games.

I think something like that would be an interesting idea. The only problem is, I can't think of any game types other than role-playing. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? What else would we need?

Might need more info about the two groups, but a 2-player game where you play as both Basitin nations at war with each other might be interesting. Would likely have to be card-based, but I have no idea how to go about designing such a thing.

What you mean by card-based?

Also, that's now two ideas for printable games; an RPG, and an Eastern Basitin versus Western Basitin game.

Perhaps a full-blown game is a bit too ambitious at the moment. Similar to revise (and try to revive) this idea, how about printable Army Men like figurines and accessories like this?

Now for the crowd sourcing part; what all do we need/want in the way of these things, and is there anything else that can be added?

I personally would like the figurines and buildings (and for all of them to be properly scaled [for example a two-story building NOT being the same height as a person]).

printable chess sets could be nifty, and maybe even different factions...

Templars, Team A/B, Bastins, etc.

In the age of 3D printing anything is possible!
Imagine if some talented people would make a 3D model of your favorite Two Kinds character or location. Even if you do not have one of those devices there are several services were you send the file and they mail it to you for a fee.
Alas the machines are still pretty costly and not everyone can make decent 3D models. Specially if the meant to look human.

In any case There is also the legal stuff. Not been here for long, and Tom seems ok with fanart of his work. But I imagine you still need to ask him if he is ok with that.

True. We all remember what the french guy did. So it would be a long discussion over that.

Let's avoid blatant plagiarism. Tom used to have a Creative Commons license agreement on the main page, but it's gone now.

Ah! The wonders of modern textiles. Let me share my two bits on the topic.
Personally never had anything similar, I am geographically challenged so it is hard to get that kind stuff, In any case custom pillows are a bit too niche and the machinery used is a bit more complex, thus it is harder to source. I have printed a few shirts in the past but a full body pillow would be a different can of worms and most silk-screen printings (that is the technique used) are poor quality. I once had a friend who bought a custom $50 shirt and the drawing fell off a couple months later. There is the option of machine embroidery but that would be too expensive.

Also you would need to get a "suitable" pattern.

Why does this seem like something that needs to be done but not as many people are on board with the idea?

Also idea, how about like warhammer 40k with the figurines for a strategy game?

Honestly i was thinking about something like that the other day.
I was listening to some Fire emblem music. That game series is old, running on its first iteration on a NES running on a 6502 at 1.7 MHz. At that rate you could run a very similar game engine on paper and pencil. Even D&D is more complex than that and runs fine. You can make you own "maps" and "units" either as figures or written character sheets if you are more of a frugal person. And can be done so that if falls under fair use so we can save teh lawyer money.
