Forum email is coming from a different location

#1 Post by aj »

If you're using a Hotmail.com, Outlook.com or Live.com email address, you might have noticed that you're not getting emails from the forum.

Microsoft seems to have decided a whole bunch of servers at 1and1 (where the forum is hosted) send spam, and unfortunately the forum is caught up in Microsoft's blacklist.

I've blocked the above domains from being used to register new accounts, but those with existing accounts, you should change your email addresses to something non-Microsoft owned, like gmail or yahoo.

Emails are now going to look something like for the next ~month:

If you're on hotmail/outlook/live.com I'd still recommend you change your address though.

you might want to make the forum send mail through a dedicated system so you are not stuck on the shared ip address. I personally have been using https://www.mailgun.com/ because of the free plan. Unfortunately I did not find a plugin for phpbb with mailgun but I did find a small discussion about it. https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtop ... &t=2167535

Oh, I've tried. Mailgun wants DNS changes, and I don't have the authority/access.

Tom rather busy, and it's somewhat lower priority for him.

Oh, nice to see some movement on this.

There still is a 'Smith' waiting for a mail from this forum on his @hotmail.com address (and maybe another one with 'Smith' in the name, can't remember)
Those can be deleted, I decided to go on with this nick (including at some other places)

In other words: Hotmail never worked (or at least for as long as I am here)

It took me some time to find the email settings again.
User control panel -> Profile -> Edit account settings
Should go to https://twokinds.net/forum/ucp.php?i=uc ... eg_details
If it moves but shouldn't: Duct tape. If it doesn't move but should: WD-40. With a hammer everything fits, and if it still doesn't fit: bigger hammer. If it can't be fixed with a hammer it's an electrical problem.

Alright, Mailgun didn't work, but Sendgrid did. All forum emails will now come via sendgrid.net for the forseeable future.

As long as we don't bust the 12k emails/month limit, it won't cost me any money. 8)

Prepare thy email. :P

Gmail reporting in. The email for me is only used as a password/admin emergency thingy, so I don't care much for this whole thing.

But if it means y'all can get your Furry News on your doorstep every morning, then you go girl.

How much if you do? Lol, swear filters.

And do you have any statistics to say that we'll be fine? [censored]?

Just for the record, if people do email me because of this, please also send a PM if you don't hear back within a day or so :P

A few of you have email addresses that seem to no longer exist in your accounts. If you're one of them, I'll be deleting your email address from your account and PMing you.

I'll be doing the same for any future message that bounces too - if enough email bounces, the new provider will just outright block all email the forum sends, and that will affect everyone, not just you.

Hmm, I was wondering if this was anything to do with my problem — I haven't had any forum emails since the 28th, and I can see from looking that the threads for Panel Shuffle and this week's comic page (both subscribed) have been getting regular posts since then. And there's nothing in my junk or "didn't hit any other filters" mail folders. All other phpBB forums I'm registered at have been sending emails properly all through this.

Okay, the previous e-mail stoppage has been fixed, but now there's something I'm a bit wary of.

The links in the e-mail should be pointing directly to twokinds.net/forum/ — they're not, they're pointing to an alphabet soup redirect on sendgrid.net.

My e-mail client (Thunderbird) has flagged this as possible scam behaviour, and I agree it does look very suspicious. Anyone else noticed odd behaviour from these new e-mails?

Can confirm that the links go through a tracker, and that that's kinda sorta scammish. I wonder if that can be opted out of on the free plan?

Guess I should look at their ToS at some point, because I'm not really familiar with how these businesses operate.
