Subsilver, and why it's gone

#1 Post by aj »

We're now on the latest version of phpBB, which unfortunately dropped the old subsilver style. So everyone is unfortunately forced to use prosilver.
Sorry about that, but it's unavoidable if we want to keep phpBB at least somewhat secure. :(
Tom found a working version

The upgrade also brought a bunch of other things along:
- Halfway decent HTTPS connections (We at least badly pass the SSL Labs test, as opposed to outright failing)
- Updated PHP & MySQL, so the site should feel a bit snappier to use
- Updated Apache as well, just for good measure

If you see any issues, please post about them here (and take a screenshot)! I'll be continuing to tune some backend stuff now that everything's on new versions.

Actually, just pointing out, the style 'subsilver2' is similar enough to the old subsilver that people who don't like the changes can switch to that.

Does this not work?

EDIT: In the time it took me to post this, SubSilver2 was re-added. Thanks!

Hey everyone. I managed to find a version of the good-old subsilver that was compatible with the new phpbb update, so it's back as default. However, if you liked the updated style, fear not! It's still available if you so choose. Just go to the top right, in the user control panel under board preferences, and change it to prosilver instead. That'll give you the new look back. Otherwise, everything's back to normal again!

Thanks, aj, for the forum update!

Yep, you can actually thank Tom for the new styles!
I didn't look long or hard enough clearly. :P

Also, forgot to add - search is supposed to be dramatically better as well. New database brought full text search along, it's supposed to be matching on anything between 4 to 84 characters. So go crazy and try it!

Quick question. When I'm logged in to the forum I can set the time to match my time zone, however if I browse the forum while not logged in the times are UTC. is there any way I can change that to match my time zone as well? (I'm using the updated subsilver style by the way.)

f I'm understanding your question right, no, you have to be logged in to set your time zone. If you're logged out you appear as a guest, there's no way to tie a time zone to a particular guest. (Well, there is, but then each guest would end up with a pseudo account that would be a hassle all around).

Wie have a SSL certificate \o/
For making Apache with SSL a bit more secure have a look at this: https://weakdh.org/sysadmin.html
To further improve security I would switch to nginx but this is a bit more work to configure everything...
(Btw: you can get free SSL certs from startcom)

How about a redirect to https?

And I was about to say that the report looks about right, but if you updated apache as well... come on, go for that A+ :P

Don't know what any of that does but creatures of habit should be used to the changes in due time.

If I was going to manually compile stuff, I'd jump to nginx + php-fpm + mariadb. And then openssl, which is blocking the upgrade to tls1.2. :/

Only got everything on CentOS 5 because a kind soul is compiling some things into rpms.

Ah, so it's still stock. Then I go back to 'looks about right.'

Redirect to https? I'll freely admit that I'm once again on http because I just follow the links. I figure I can always rabble rouse on IRC if someone steals my identity, and I use PGP for all my opsec stuff anyway :P

Any reason I can't upload a new avatar image? I have to host it for myself now... (I think it should be fine although my Pi isn't the fastest ^^)
