One thing i think alot of Europeans (dont know if its the same in the US) can say, its that its getting Bloody cold here. Now a problem is, that Europe and Switzerland have decided to shut down their nuclear power plants... Without having replacements for them. Now, During summer, our plants run at about 20%, but in winter, especially when its ****ing cold, they run at 100% and we buy buy extra power from Germany. Now, this week, there have been power shortages, 10 000 homes in Zurich were left in the dark, because there just aint enough power. Why the **** would we shut down our plants because of an accident in Japan?
1.) There have been no majour earthquakes in europe since 30/35 years.
2.) We are not next to the sea,
3.) We have already had our plants for such a long time and nothing happend.
4.) The proposed solutions are [censored], i mean dams destroy valleys, they dont want wind turbines because they say they make noise.
Well done ecologists, You may raise the 400 death toll higher in the future, just because we dont have enough power to heat our homes.
Freezing cold, and No power to heat.

The question still remains, what will we heat ourselves with? Dams destroy valley's, and to power just Switzerland, we would need one just as big as switzerland just to power us. And looking at the amount generated, Nuclear is the cleanest

I'm pretty sure western europe has more rigid standards then the ex com bloc nations under the USSR.Gabriel of creosha wrote:well think abou it... europe... nuclear power, recent accident... they really don't want chernobyll to happen again.
The closing of european power plants, to me, was just a emotional feel good move because people were afraid of what happened on the other side of the world, even though like Phantom mentioned there were basically no similar problems in Europe that the Japanese plants had.

Chernobyll was a case of human error taken to the extreme. A case of people doing everything exactly as wrong as they could.
Shutting down a nuclear plant that your country needs because a natural disaster on the other side of the world caused an incident at a nuclear plant...
Stupid.

And literally the worst reactor/building design ever implemented.Talaisan wrote:Chernobyll was a case of human error taken to the extreme. A case of people doing everything exactly as wrong as they could.
Take Three Mile Island:
-The worst Nuclear incident in US history.
-No fatalities.
-Radiation was almost completely contained; long-term health effects are negligible.
Honestly, I suspect a coal-fired plant failing catastrophically would be far more dangerous.
People get the idea of the plant going up in a mushroom cloud, but not only is that not how a meltdown works at all, but the buildings are designed to contain the possible fallout.
This is what happens when you have alarmist media and gullible citizens; things that aren't a big deal at all get blown up into outrageous proportions.

I belive that its just panic, and over reaction due to that situation. Chernobyll was a hard lesson, but i belive that modern countries learned their lessons, and have back up systems. What im saying, is Nuclear power provides Switzerland with 50% of its electrical needs ( i have an uncle working in the power industry). Now how can you shut down 50% of your power generators, without having any to back it up or replace it? Dams destroy valley's so they aint "Greener". Our oldest plant was built in 1969 <------ Long time ago.... To say nothing happend. Now they wanted to rebuild and modernize the plant with newer and safer tech, but because of the accident, it was put on hold. (The Video). Plus, something that people might have noticed in Jan/Feb when they visit Switzerland, we have a warning system, we have bunkers, hell we have all sorts of protections. (Video).Talaisan wrote:Chernobyll was a case of human error taken to the extreme. A case of people doing everything exactly as wrong as they could.

Problem is here, THere are soooo many political groups, they end up **** fighting over what to do instead of doing it. (Vid)

See, the lesson wasn't having backup systems. Chernobyl had backup systems. The lesson is more along the lines of "don't bypass all of your safety measures to run tests with an inexperienced crew and with a crappy plant design."Phantom wrote:I belive that its just panic, and over reaction due to that situation. let's just say Chernobyl was an almighty cock up and leave it at that eh? (I mean honestly, it's silly to compare it to any other nuclear accidents...it's just so much different)Sable Dove wrote:See, the lesson wasn't having backup systems. Chernobyl had backup systems. But yes, this is all very silly. Very silly indeed. But tell you what, winter is almost over for you so that's all good and fair for a while and really? in that time (I mean till next winter) they could have found themselves some solution. (Like re-opening the plants, or making a giant magical fairy dust power plant...I dunno)
