This is certainly an interesting idea... subscribed for updates. I plan to get a VR device as soon as they hit the market and I can afford one, and this would certainly be a lovely way to put it to use.

You should look into the Unreal Engine 4.
It is great for photo realistic rendering, has VR Support and works natively on Linux
(I played the vanishing of ethan carter redux on an oculus DK2 and it is just AMAZING )
