No. At least when I played before it became Free to Play, You could use any ability, unless is specifically said otherwise. What class you are and what ship you have don't matter unless the abilities are for your officers like I stated before regarding ships.
Upon looking online (since information on the skills in the game is so vague at best) I have fou-son of a [censored] it's a bridge officer ability. And while the more useful energy siphon is a Lt. ability, Tacyon Beam is at least an Ensign ability and if I get lucky and the next 'pick an officer' moment I get has a science officer with Tacyon beam, I can either replace my current sci officer or just train up from mask energy signature, which really ain't useful at all, to Tacyon Beam. It really sucks that if you pick a ship that favors one type of officer your officers in the other two careers can't even use their abilities beyond the Ensign level. But, I guess they had to find a way to [censored] us somehow.

Now may be as good a time as any to say I am playing again.

Went from a 33 Captain to a 45 Rear Admiral. Just 5 more levels till I'm Vice Admiral. Not that I plan on purchasing any of the Pay to Own VA ships... Which are apparently the only kind available for that rank...

Kind of a shame. I would have totally picked up the Tactical Oddessy ship too... Or the Carrier.. That thing is just awesome looking, but everyone seems to use it.
So someone send me some C-Points so I can get the Oddessy ship, will ya? I'll trade for all the Dilithium I have.

I'd want that one with the spinal phaser lance. I thought there was some kind of exchange rate for dilithium to cpoints, though, wasn't there?

The lowest was 304 Dilithium for 1 C-Point.
That's around 30,000 Dilithium per 100 C-Points.
The ship pack (Idk how much the particular ship individually is) is 4000 C-Points.
I have 20,000 Dilithium.

And you thought gas prices were outrageous....

To give you a better idea of this though...
The master keys to unlock those lockboxes? You can buy at the exchange for 1.5 million+ Energy Credits.
So yeah, either you pay upfront, the C-Points, or you grind for WEEKS to get the dilithium you need. Their great exchange system isn't so great... It's amazingly overpriced.... And that's what you get when you leave the community to set the prices.

Between the number of missions that give ship components as rewards and the frequency with which they can be repeated, getting that many Energy Credits would take a day at most. Hell, less if you speedrun the missions. As for things you need Dilithium or C-Points for...damn dude, just damn. I really really want that vice admiral ship with the spinal phaser lance, too.

I was thinking about making a Fleet called Gekkostate, but we need at least 5 people in a group to make it.

Interested?

I also just hit Vice Admiral, and am campaigning in the Gamma something-or-other sector with my awesome Cruiser (The escorts and science vessels didn't back enough punch for me...).
I haz purple Impulse Engines! Now, I am looking to complete the Aegis Very Rare upgrade set I saw in the exchange. I'm gonna start with the shields for around 1.6 mil Energy Credits. The overall Shield capacity is even higher than my Covariant Shield Array Mk X [Cap]x2 [Pla]. Actually, ALL the Aegis set parts are better than what I currently have....

I has to agree with you about Cruisers having the best weapons based damage potential. Sure, Escorts can mount cannons and heavy cannons, the physically strongest weapons, but they have such narrow targeting arcs. Science vessels could make for some awesome bridge officer powers, but Cruisers, aye poppy, they get to bring an awesome amount of firepower to bear, and they have a strong enough shield and hull modifier that going max power to weapons is actually somewhat safe, and really, the more weapons you have, the less any of the other configurations is really an option. I like the tactical team tactical officer ability. Doesn't heal shields, just distributes shield power to whatever facing is taking damage. Muy useful, amigo.

I personally have my Ensign and LT Tactical slots both set to Torpedo: Full Spread I and II. That has saved my [censored] more times than I can count. It attacks up to three ships at once, and basically knocks down Borg Drone ships in seconds, which is extremely useful.

I also have Warp Plasma on my second Engineer. It slows the enemy down long enough for my mines to do their job >.>
I could give you my full spec if you want. It has allowed me to get away with not dying for a pretty long time.
I also recently switched from Quantum Torpedoes to Transphasic Torpedoes. Honestly, it doesn't make a lick of difference, but after seeing blue all the time (I also use tetryon-based weapons) it's a nice change. I will definitely be switching to anti-proton beam arrays as they become available to me.

You can also get tactical consoles to up your weapon types.

Got back to playing Star Trek Online recently, and I need people to do the high level PvE queues with me.

EDIT: Now have Aegis Shield and Engines after working on my crafting (Took all of 20 minutes). I'm out of Dilitheum because of the outrageous cost of uncommon unreplicatable materials, because purchasing them is the only way to get them for some unknown reason.

Regardless, All I need now is to do PvE queues to get my 4 Antiproton Beam Arrays, so anyone interested lemme know.
... Prolly gonna just purchase the Aegis Deflector...

Well, this is certainly a thing. Any other players getting an account verification issue when they login tonight or recently? I was gonna play tonight for the first time in a couple of weeks, and just out of nowhere it's asking for some kind of account verification code that was supposedly sent to my email. Fellow captains, what the fragging hell is going on?

They sent me an email about a month ago that their system had been hacked and user data exposed, so they were requiring me to do the whole password recovery thing before they'd let me log in again. Maybe something related to that.

I never received said email.

This is gonna be a problem the next time I wanna play....
Where do you go to request the email?
Was it a Perfect World Entertainment breach, or a Cryptic/STO breach only?

Well, my thing isn't a password recovery thing, it's just the new thing they're doing. There's a helpful "remember machine'' checkbox so you only have to do it once. I submitted a ticket and followed the advice I got, logged out of the game and site, hoping that the email arrives in my inbox or, for whatever reason, my spambox, in the next 30 minutes. Rule of thumb with PWI emails, always check your spambox.
