I would like to enter this contest, however, I'd like to write my story in a word-document editing program first to make sure I can stay within the short story constraint..... How many pages would be the absolute maximum for this approach to writing a story?
Due to the nature of the competition, I really can't put a hard page or word count on it, since each story is different and, overall, I'd rather you post a complete story than one that's been cut apart to fit a defined limit.

That said, last year we had our longest story to date, and that was...like, 20-some-odd pages I think. That was tipping things a bit. So, use your best judgement.

NuclearBird wrote: Sat Nov 11, 2017 10:24 pm I already have the first chapter ready to be posted on the Story Forum. Regarding that, what's the upper limit on word count? I assume it's somewhere around 30 000 or so.
See above.

For the record, my story last year (the aforementioned too-long one) came in at 27 pages and 12,579 words. Considering it made a judge literally quit, and almost got me disqualified... Well, it was too long. Do with that what you will.

Stop being so hard on yourself, damnit. It wasn't your story alone that made a judge quit :P There were a variety of things.

If a judge DID quit* because one story was too long**, that person should not have volunteered to be a judge. And if they ever volunteer to be a judge again, a polite "no thank you" would seem appropriate.

* Not recalling details, I'm assuming that "quit" means "stopped being a judge in the middle of the contest". Saying "I'll finish this year but find someone else for next time, I'm done" is entirely different.

** There are valid reasons that would justify quitting. A sudden change in circumstances. A medical emergency. Reasonably expecting a dozen entries and getting two hundred - a vastly greater time demand than planned for - might qualify depending on other circumstances. But not "this story is too long".

Honestly, 12.5k words isn't that long for a short story.
20k on the other hand...
If the universe is infinite, does that mean that there is a version of me out there who's thinking the exact same thing?

While we're on the topic of alternate universes, is there one where I'm a lawyer? If yes, then I may be more evil than I thought.

Okay folks, move the conversation along. This is neither the place nor circumstance to discuss last year's judging.

Don't make me break out the mod voice.

Honestly, slow. I could get the Next Part/chapter done, but it'll be after the Competition. So, it's just the First part/Chapter for me. ^^,

So like, is there a rule setting-wise for this? Does it have to be about a particular thing or theme or are we just free to write things to our heart's content? ^^

Also, yes, I may be concidering joining a writing competition five days before deadline, I am crazy :potatoes:

Nope, no rules! Any setting, any theme, anything you'd like!

Here we go again with the double-posting! Yay!

Just wanted to say that I've written a thing now. Just like to let people know. In case someone missed it. Or something. I'll just be quiet now, bye! :|

It's in the Master List (first page), best of luck!

And that means we're just about 36 Hours (give or take) away from the end of competition time! Make your last edits, folks, and get those stories posted!

Okay, I think my submission is done. Anyone finds a typo, I don't care. Blame Microsoft Word for it.
Anyway, I renamed the story to "The Whitefield Report" so, uh. That's all I think.
Just 20 pages. EXACTLY. 20 pages. In Word.
