Nice battle. They cleaned up the Templars pretty quickly. And lol Jenna.

The youngster is of course a little apprehensive. He hasn't spent years with any single cause, so he won't be brainwashed, patriotic or nostalgic quite yet.

Didn't see any errors. Awaiting next installment. :)

Next installment is here. I have no idea how I typed so much so fast...

**********************
Greetings, your Majesty King Adelaide,

(I also extend acknowledgment also to Master General Aster Alabaster, and whoever has joined us as Arms General and Intelligence General.)

Although I have not had much experience writing formal reports, I hope that what I write here gives you a good picture of my present location, which I feel has some potential should we ever be in need of an ally. After a brief incident in transit, (Please inform whoever was responsible for putting Lieutenant Adelaide aboard that a much better hiding place should have been arranged. As it was, my companions and I almost died in a shipboard fire) the ship landed in Edinmire. After traveling through Feline and Tiger territories, we arrived at a location considered a far-fetched legend by many people: The town of Lyn’Knoll, where Human, Keidran, and our fellow Basitin have decided to put aside their differences and live in peace.

While some of you might consider this alone to be an impressive feat, I have found that the people here have gone far above and beyond any of the fleeting rumors about this place. What was at one point barely a village had grown into a city, complete with a government, the Lyn’Knoll Confederacy. Simple trading areas were fully-fledged marketplaces, and workshops and smithies completely different. But more on that later.

Once I arrived, and the government got word of my position, I was directed to a group called the Alpha Guard. To summarize the descriptions that I heard from numerous individuals, they are a highly qualified group of individuals, who serve as diplomats and are the first to extend the hand of friendship to those who are allies, but also serve as elite soldiers, delivering the wrath of the Confederacy to their enemies so effectively that their mere presence on the battlefield raises the morale of other Confederate troops. Although many were skeptical when the group was first founded, they quickly proved their worth in skirmishes against anti-human Tiger extremists, including the infamous TFO, or True Felines Only group, who were also pursuing an agenda of hatred against “lesser” Felines who were not Tigers.

At present, there are nine individuals in the Alpha Guard. Kara‘liana, a Keidran woman, serves as the present leader of the group. I have not been able to speak with her very much, but she’s had an unfortunately close relationship with the slave trade. I can only assume that her still simmering anger is part of what motivates her. Next is Markus (no last name given), a towering tiger Keidran that, physically speaking, would easily match up with our king. A third-generation confederate, he proudly served in the militia, and gladly accepted the chance to become part of the Alpha Guard. Unfortunately, he was captured in a prior skirmish, and by the time the rest of the Alphas recued him, he had been reduced to a half-feral state, unable to speak in anything more than snarls and growls. His mind is still intact, and is prevented from slipping over the edge by a control collar linked to Kara.

The next few Alphas of note are three Basitin: Jenna, an impulsive young woman with a talent for modifying and designing machinery, often shutting herself in her workshop for hours on end as she pursues every idea possible. She claims to be half Western, quarter Eastern, and quarter Fox. (And I thought I was a strange mix…) Kyle, on the other hand, is more patient and reserved, preferring to sit quietly and observe before acting. Some, including myself, find his constant gaze unnerving, and his albino fur fits his nickname, “Ghost”. The third Basitin is a recent arrival, and hides his face beneath a cloth mask and visored helmet; it is part of an identity protection protocol for recent arrivals from the Island. I don’t know if he’s Eastern or Western, but I do know, however, that he took the opportunity to come here after being mistakenly listed as KIA by his superiors. At present, he refers to himself as “Alpha Six”, or “Six” for short, and has been assigned to me as a guide, serving to show me around Lyn’knoll in an informal diplomatic arrangement.

As for the Humans, there is Jonathan Sage, the team medic, and Jason Kiet. Due to my busy touring schedule, I have not had much time to talk with either of them. Finally, the wolf Keidran I was traveling with, along with his brother have also been accepted to the Alpha Guard thanks to recommendation from the Directory of Strategy.

Departing on my excursion around town, led by Six, a general tour revealed several distinct districts. The residential area towards the north was, of course, populated by all three species, with several sub-districts resulting from an unplanned yet non-hostile clustering of like individuals; a human is perfectly free to visit and even live in either the Keidran “Village” sub-district, or the Basitin sub-district, which has, unsurprisingly, gained the nickname of the “Barracks”.

Moving further south brings us to the main commercial area, with several streets of shops, and market squares. Aside from sundry items like clothing, tools and food, several unique products caught my eye as my guide and I walked through. The first was a bin full of golden yellow crystals, called ambrosium. As explained by the shopkeeper, they were produced from the sap of oak trees that had been altered by rune-based magic, taking the benefits of a healing spell and infusing them into a biological medium. The only thing needed to get them to work was either consuming the crystals, or, liquefying them to spread on injuries. Subtle differences in hue and shape arise from several different specializations of ambrosium crystal. While the product being sold could only help with minor wounds and common maladies, medical facilities have access to more potent and specialized ambrosium types. The highest grade, which exists only as a liquid, is reserved for emergency cases, as well as the militia. The most important aspect of ambrosium is the fact that its usage does not involve any mental manipulation of magical energy whatsoever, rendering it safe for even Basitin to use.

Moving on, the next item that drew my attention was more of a curiosity and anything else, but demonstrates the ability of individuals within the Confederacy to come up with practical solutions to solve practical problems. With a relatively large Keidran population, feeding them all quickly became an issue. Allowing them to hunt for meat in the surrounding area was out of the question, but a farming setup that could produce the necessary meat would be far too large. And so K-safe bread was invented. After a study conducted on just why the Keidran digestive system could not deal with plant material, a few researchers decided to find a way to eliminate the incompatible materials from items like bread, opening up more plentiful options for the Keidran. Out of curiosity, I decided to try some: while described as bland by some Keidran, I found nothing objectionable other than a slight difference in texture. However, even minor issues like these drive people to find better, more refined solutions, and so other K-safe products are being developed.

To the east of the trading area lie several large collections of buildings, referred to by my guide as “Industrial Complexes.” Towering above the ground, with exhaust billowing from dozens of smokestacks, the din of the massive machinery inside can be heard several blocks away. After acquiring the appropriate hearing protection, I followed my guide into the chaos.

Inside, I found that the Confederates had taken steps to mechanize most of the production of various staple goods. As was explained to me, one of the benefits of the location of Lyn’Knoll is near exclusive access to a unique mineral called blast-stone, so named for the mining accidents it caused when it would explosively release the heat and pressure stored within. It is theorized that this mineral forms in volcanic currents responsible for the warmth of the jungle regions to the south, storing both the heat and immense pressure from under the ground in its structure. Even with the development of sounding spells, which could detect deposits of this dangerous mineral, accidents still happened. Only after much research by the confederacy's finest scientists and investigative mages was a safe extraction method found. By applying force at precise points through the use of magic, large, dangerous crystals could be subdivided into smaller, more stable crystals; it is these fragments that are used to heat water into steam, driving pistons that provide mechanical power to the factories, as well as pull transportation carts (streetcars) by means of cables set into the ground.

Massive automated hammers rise and fall, powered by cogs and wheels, crushing down ore for smelting; at the other end, meter long slabs of steel glide across the factory floor, stacked into boxes for stockpiling, or sent off to other parts of the manufacturing complex. In another area, vast vats bubble and churn, refining things like ambrosium crystals, or creating huge batches of K-safe foods. To be perfectly honest, seeing those factories was frightening, in a way. If we, or anyone else, for that matter, was to come into conflict with these people, the Confederate would likely outlast any siege, then use their machinery to equip their army at a fraction of the cost and time it would takes us or the templar to do so.

Moving on to a lighter topic, the region to the west of the commercial area is place of research and learning, where the Confederacy’s best and brightest come together to delve into the mysteries of the world. It is here that they came up with ambrosium, the method to make it, and many other things. The two biggest discoveries made here were runic theory, and the Bowman process. With runic theory, it was found that precise etchings or carvings, made by an appropriately trained mage, could direct and control magical energy without the need for outside intervention. As such, a magical device constructed in such a manner would be safe for all to use, because it requires no magic to run through the mind of the end user. From machines to aid medicine, to mirrors that can display images from afar, it seems as though there is no end to the possibilities that can be explored. Runes can even be carved into trees and plants to alter their properties, producing things like ambrosium or ironwood, a staple building material that’s stronger than ordinary planks, but cheaper than stone fortifications. As for the Bowman process, most of the explanation as to how it works went over my head, but the end result is a slowing some form of internal “clock” in Keidran, allowing them to live at least 60 years rather than 20; implemented only recently, it is unknown whether it’s any more or less effective than predicted. To any pessimists reading this who think we will go to war with these "enhanced" Keidran, the tactical ramifications at this point are unknown. Again, our best option is to avoid a fight with these people entirely.

When I questioned my guide on just how people here had achieved so much, he told me this: “At first, people here were content to hide, to get away from the conflict outside. But it made them apathetic; with no real reason to collaborate, they drifted apart, the three species becoming isolated from each other. It was only a matter of time before hate and fear arose from that isolation. Fortunately, people started to realize this, and made the determination that not only would they just hide and survive, but slowly start building up to make a point to the rest of the world. And the point was that we, the Confederates, can do everything anyone else can, but do more, and do it better, because we’re actually working as a unified force.”

And with that, we boarded a streetcar, pulled by a cable that probably snaked its way back to the industrial district, and journeyed down to the southern area of Lyn’knoll, where most of the government buildings are located. It was quite flattering when I found out that they had organized their government with many deliberate similarities to our own. Where we have our four Generals, each with their own role and jurisdiction of various decisions, they have Directors, each overseeing a different department of the Confederate Government. At this point, there are six directors: The Director of Strategy heads the military and the associated department, while the Director of Commerce would handle all trade issues and marketplace rules, so on and so forth for the Director of Justice (law/law enforcement), Director of Intelligence (Gathering information on threats to the Confederacy), Director of Research (Oversees the research district and all discoveries), Director of Agriculture (Manages farming practice and protocol) All of these Directors then answer to the Triad, a Basitin, Human, and Keidran who jointly run the confederacy as a whole.

And with that, I’m ending this report. I hope that I have conveyed the more important as well as interesting aspects of my present location, and will finish with the statement that should we ever need the help, these Confederates would make worthy allies.

***********************
Keith let out a long sigh as he finally set down his pen. It was pitch-black outside. Looking at the light on his desk, he noticed how it still surprised him that it wasn’t a candle burning down, but one of the runic mana-lamps, another thing made possible by the Confederacy.

Leaving the pages on the desk, Keith turned around and found himself staring into a pair of ruby red eyes. Kyle, the Ghost, was at it again. “Ah! Crap! How long were you watching me this time?!?” Keith exclaimed.

“Pretty much since I heard the scratching of your pen. If you really must know, I was reading over your shoulder, too.” Kyle replied, grinning at Keith’s deadpan expression.

“But seriously,” he continued, “I was just curious to see what an outsider has to say about us. I mean, Alaric’s hasn’t even been here that long, and you heard him going on and on about how great this place is on the tours. And speaking of Alaric, I should remind him to thank you.”

“Thank me? For what?” Keith asked, confused.

“For not mentioning him in the report. For making it look like you swallowed that “Alpha Six” thing hook, line and sinker.”

“Well, he’s my friend, what else am I supposed to do?”

“Your friend, hmm? So I guess he hasn’t told you, then.”

Now Keith was even more confused. “Wait, he hasn’t told me what?”

Kyle grinned mischievously. “He wants to tell you himself, its just that he keeps on stalling.”

“Ok, now you’re just messing with me.” Keith shot back.

“Well, he’s my friend, what else am I supposed to do?” Kyle responded, as he walked to the door. “And with that, I bid you good night, Ambassador.”

Keith stared blankly at the open doorway. “What the hell was that all about?”

Nice, I liked the descriptions of the fantasy-tech. I'll need to remember some of the things you've come up with, when my story finally gets to Baru'ni.

The idea of the Alphas being keepers of peace is pretty cool, too. Not just kicking Templar butt, but also trying to remove racism and keep morale among other Confederates.

I found a couple errors, and will send them shortly. Good job with writing faster than me, though. :P

Well, its not as long as the last one, but here, enjoy this for now!

******************
[REDACTED] woke up to a facefull of fur: just as he had been every morning of the past few crazy weeks. And just as he had every single morning, he thought back to how it all started…

******************

[REDACTED] Sat at a table in the courtroom, his gaze boring into the wood of the desk. At another desk sat the Keidran, Nathan, (aka North) who he’d been fighting with. A bored looking jury was seated off to the side. After a long silence, the judge spoke. “A disgrace. That’s what you two are. Fighting in the street, Masks above… Nathan Dakota, verbal abuse is no excuse to start a fight. And you, [REDACTED], you bringing your casual hate and belligerence into our upstanding community is the last thing that anyone wanted. After conferring with your sister,” The judge gestured to Nathan, AKA North, “And your companions,” he pointed at [REDACTED], I have decided to forego a conventional sentence.”

[REDACTED] looked up from the table in surprise. Casting his gaze around the room, he could see North with his face in his paws, while the jury seemed to smile knowingly.

The judge continued speaking: “Despite what either of you did or said, there is no reason good enough to make us fight with each other. There are enemies enough for all of us outside this place. We live together, or we die. You two young fools have hurt not only each other, but all of us, the Confederacy.” The judge turned to [REDACTED]. “Seeing as you don’t have a home here yet, and given the fact that your hate stems from ignorance, I am sentencing the two of you to four weeks of co-op procedure 619-B. Court dismissed, Enforcers, escort these two back to their cells.”

Little more than an hour later, both [REDACTED] and North stumbled out onto the street. Apparently, co-op procedure 619-B consisted of getting chained at the ankle to whoever you were sentenced along side. [REDACTED] glared at the Keidran next to him. “This is humiliating.” He said. North rolled his eyes in response. “Yes, it is humiliating. That’s kind of the point. Now lets get moving and go back to my house. At least we won’t have people staring at us.”

After much stumbling, cursing, then finally swallowing their pride and hanging on to each other so they could walk five steps without tumbling to the ground, they finally made it to North’s house. Stopping at the front door, North turned to [REDACTED]: “Just one thing: you’re not going to make the best first impression as it is, so don’t do anything stupid, Red.”

“Yeah, yeah. And don’t call me Red.”

“No, I think I will call you Red, just to get on your nerves.” North shot back as he knocked on the door. “MOM!!! I’M HOME!” He called out.

Red gave North a very confused look. “Your Mom? I mean, you’re Keidran, shouldn’t she be dead by now?”
“Damn, you really are new here aren’t you? Haven’t you heard of the Bowman process?”

“The what? Bowman…” Red began, but was cut off as the door opened, revealing a jet-black wolf, looking at the two of them with a deadpan expression. Only four people in the entire Confederacy could have picked up on the minute glimmer of amusement in her golden eyes.

North could only grin sheepishly. “Hey Mom. I brought home another one. I’m calling him Red.”

“Your sister told me all about the whole sorry mess.” North’s mother replied flatly.

Red edged as far away from North as the short chain between them would allow. “You’ve done this before?” He asked in alarm. “And don’t call me that!”

“Hey, it was far back enough that it was on my juvenile record, OK?” North snapped defensively. “Besides, we all know how well that ended, right Mom?”

North’s mother rolled her eyes in exasperation. “Yes, yes, York drops by almost every weekend now…” She sighed, and continued. “Well, come in you two. No point in bellyaching over our mistakes. Oh, and Red? Call me Allison.”

And with that Red was very unceremoniously dragged through the door by an irate North. It was going to be a long four weeks.

******************
Red’s thoughts were interrupted as he was very unceremoniously dragged out of bed by an irate North. Damn that chain…

Well folks, another short update, but its the best I can do right now. (And if the ending seems a little lackluster, blame it on the fact that I wrote it under the influence of a terrible headache.)

Oh well. Hope you are able to enjoy this next portion of story, despite its meager size.

*****************
One, two, one, two… Red counted in his head as he walked down the stairs. Beside him, silently moving his mouth around the words, North did the same. Neither of them wanted to repeat the first morning they tried walking down the stairs: it certainly was the fastest time they made it down there, but certainly not the most comfortable.

Allison spoke up as the two moved to take their usual seats at the table: “There you two are! You better eat quick if you don’t want to miss the streetcar!”

North look up from where he was digging into his food. “Miss the streetcar? Doesn’t it come every half-hour around here?” He asked.

“Here, read this.” North’s mother said as she slid a newssheet across the table.

Red couldn’t help but smirk a little as North buried his muzzle in the pages. A part of him still felt that a Keidran who could read was an oddity. Red was brought back to his senses as North shoved the paper in front of him: thankfully the human language had emerged as a standard for printed publications. A bold headline ran across the top of the page: “ALPHAS CAPTURE TEMPLAR BATTLE GROUP!” The article went on: “A tragic, unprovoked attack on our citizens was carried out by Templar troops yesterday evening at the western mining tunnels. Thankfully, a rapid response from the Alpha guard was able to minimize casualties…” Red skimmed to the bottom of the page, where the article concluded with: “In light of recent security concerns, both the Director of Strategy and the Director of Justice have agreed to enact a nine-block lockdown in the area surrounding the prison. The following streetcar routes have been affected: A-F, excluding D1 and D2, both of which have had their schedules adjusted. See timetable on page 3 for full details.”

A few minutes later, Red’s head was spinning as North rushed them to the station. It wasn’t the schedule change that threw him off. It wasn’t even the fact that he thought recognized some of the drawings of the captured Templar. No, it was the descriptions of what his (former?) comrades had done. Oh, sure, the report kept things in a clinical tone, quoting from the medics and doctors, but descriptions like “several deaths caused by magically expedited blood loss” and “barely survived an amputation by a concentrated fourth degree burn to the upper arm” were hair-raising enough. It did not help that several humans were among the victims.

Even after getting kicked out of the Templars for his dismal skill with magic, Red had never questioned his loyalties. Keidran were the enemies, brutal fighters who seemed to want nothing more than to see Humans suffer. Everything he had seen back home had reinforced this; from the death of his friend Trace’s wife, to the razing of his own village that led to this whole wild escapade.

Spending a few weeks chained to a Keidran was an eye-opener in itself. (It didn’t hurt that North was simply one of the nicer people he’d met, Keidran or otherwise.) But suddenly imagining Templar brutally killing for the sake of killing just didn’t make sense to him. He had initially joined to help defend his people from the mobs of belligerent Keidran that marauded through the forest, not to become a butcher!

The streetcar ground to a halt. Somehow, Red hadn’t even noticed that they got on, so wrapped up in this thoughts. He looked up. It wasn’t their usual station. The door right next to Red clanked open, allowing in two soldiers: it was a checkpoint. Red gave a start as North poked him in the shoulder. “Look sharp. Cooperate.” He muttered tersely, the tension of the situation evident in his voice.

Red was completely willing to follow North’s advice: he had already been on the business end of an Enforcer’s pistol and its stun rounds, and wasn’t about to tangle with the larger weapons the troops had with them. But then he got a good look at the second soldier who had entered the train. The sudden flash of recognition, combined with the other passengers’ awed whispers about “the Alphas” sparked a flame of anger in him. He stood up and stepped into the aisle right in front of the trooper, looking the surprised Wolf Keidran in the eye. “You. What are you doing here?”

Hehe. Read it as soon as you posted. :P

"It wasn't even the fact that he thought he recognized some of the drawings of the captured Templar." seems to be the only issue I found. Not sure if that really fixes it, though.

Oh, and
I wrote it under the influence
Tsk tsk. You shouldn't be a drunken author until you're at least 35.

Hope you feel better man. Does ibuprofen ever help with headaches? Damn things helped me with braces, so I always go to them first when I have any aches.

Red recognized one of the assassin brothers among the alphas, I suppose he won't be able to just keep his mouth shut.

Last time I had a headache I drank some tea, downed some kind of painkiller (don't ask me which, my mother knew what I needed) and went straight to bed.

Holy [censored], it's been a while, hasn't it? I completely forgot that that I had another piece of [censored] story that I wrote but didn't post. Whee, I feel silly today! So go sit down on your Big City Toilet and have a read! (careful with that link though, consider this a language warning.)

*******************
“What am I doing… Oh.” The brown wolf said, trailing off as he realized what kind of situation he was in.

“You.” Red spat. “You were the one trailing us the whole way here. You tried to kill my friends. You tried to kill me! And now here you are, strutting around in a uniform…” Red would have continued ranting if it weren’t for a very worried North

“Red, what are you doing? Do you have any idea who this guy is?” North said, as he tried to pull Red back into his seat.

“All I know, all I need to know, is that he came THIS close to murdering me and my friends. And now here he is, acting the freaking hero, damn him!” Red retorted angrily.

“It… It wasn’t anything personal!” Zen interjected.

“Nothing personal?” Red hissed.

“Well, yeah. It’s what I was hired to do. A job, that’s all. Thing is, its not my job any more. So, how about we leave it at that?” Zen asked as he and Kara made their way off the streetcar, leaving a fuming Red behind.

North turned to Red as the streetcar started to clank its way down the street once more. “What the hell was that all about?!? You could have gotten us arrested again!”

Red’s words were as short and clipped as his tone: “Just some guy I met on the way here.” He sighed, thinking about how the wolf had simply left instead of leaving a knife in his guts. “I guess it really was just a job.”

****************
One of the soldiers who had been watching the encounter through the window turned to Zen as he and Kara made their way to the guard post, ready to hand the shift over to Sage and Jenna. “If you don’t mind me asking Sir, what in Mekkan was going on in there? You could have had him arrested you know.”

Zen shrugged as he returned the equipment to the appropriate lockers. “I didn’t think it was necessary. What can I say? He’s loudmouth who’s more bark than bite.”

The soldier grinned as he showed Zen out. “Isn’t that a bit rich, coming from you, sir?”

“Coming from me? An Alpha? I don’t think so. And stop calling me sir!” Zen called as he walked out the door.

Another soldier came up to the first. “He’s right you know. Makes you sound like a [censored].”

“Oh shut up.”
