Re: avwolf's Art (Back to the Forum on 2009-02-22)
First, let me apologize for my disappearance of late. I ended up getting very busy, and the forum sort of ended up at the wayside. I'm still catching up on everything, so if I am behind in responding to something or haven't addressed something that needs addressing, I can only offer my sincere apologies and promise that I will get to it as quickly as I am able.
Now, you might be wondering, what was ol' avwolf doing that got him so busy? Well, it was my preparations for Half-Price Chocolate Eve, of course! I threw a big party (I didn't have enough chairs in my house for everybody who showed up ).
Now, don't tell anyone, but the real reason for the party, apart from deciding that I was tired of moping every February fourteenth, was so I could follow up on an old claim, relating to this old post of Sapph's:
As you can see, it ended up coming out pretty well. (Now that I look back, I could have worn my fingerless gloves too, but it didn't occur to me at the time).
Of course, that wasn't quite goofy enough for Half-Price Chocolate Eve, so I also put together a comically oversized tophat:
If I'd ended up with more time, I'd have made the top of the hat almost as wide as the brim, to make it more Mad Hatter-esque, but I almost didn't finish the hat as it stood. But it all looked really good, considering how badly I butchered the patterns to make the costume. The hat was put together by modifying a couple of patterns that my mother had for ladies' hats. The vest is heavily modified out of a Civil War costume pattern. The Civil War uniforms were about the only easily available patterns with Mandarin collars like that. I owe my mother a lot for helping me figure out how the pattern needed changed to produce the vest. It was pretty fun to put together, though, and I'm very pleased with how it turned out.

I actually did put together a reasonable approximation of the vest:avwolf wrote:After seeing mine, I put "sewing machine" down on my shopping list.FastChapter wrote:In all seriousness, I'm going to make a point to see if I can't put this outfit together somehow. They really turned out spectacularly well, Sapph. Really stunning.

I am now all kinds of jealous. That vest is definitely wonderful, and just a bit sexy. And the leather pants?
You have now made me a believer in them.

Despite how nice that vest is, I am going to say I like the oversized tophat better. The first picture of you wearing it is awesome.

AWESOME! That hat is great, and I'd never have guessed the vest is hand-made. It's a perfect match to the original art.
You might consider writing up the making of the vest (particularly mimicking the avatar, and repurposing an existing pattern), and submit it to the Craft: blog -- just exactly the kind of stuff they love over there.

I have absolutely nothing to do with the Cartoon Network "Uncle Grandpa" shows. Didn't even know it existed until today... and I sure wouldn't pick that name now I've seen one of them.

Well, it occurred to me that, after my business trip, I forgot to post this for you all. As you might have known, I was successful in getting a commission from Tom, and it would be a shame if I didn't let you all see it.
As you can see, Tom did a fantastic job with the commission. I wanted a peaceful, romantic moment for Keith and Natani, the sort of thing that they'll probably never get in the comic. Yeah, I specified the content more completely than that, but that's the feel I wanted. I've asked Tom if he'll post it up in his DA as well, but I wanted to give you all the opportunity to see it here first.

Well, I expect that Natani's alcoholism will have improved her tolerance, so Keith will actually have to work a little to get her drunk.Tuna wrote:Neato!
