3D Modelling (Design Question and [very early] preview)

#1 Post by Taliis »

Hello.
First: Im not good in English/American grammar, so ill try to make this post as short as possible ;)

I know, that 3D modeling isnt the same as drawing but its similar, i also couldnt find a better place for my question in this forum.

The 3D model im talking about is this one here:
Image
(I know that this model is ugly. But its only a concept for an computergame.)
Texture and realistic fur (if our engine can handle it) will be added later...

I cant decide if i should use normal hands or paws...
Image

keep in mind, that its necessarily for this character to lift up objects. it would seem odd if
this char uses a sword with paws. But it would be possible with some animation tricks... ;)

Its just one of four races (sub-races not included) in this game.

And another question:
This race still hasnt a name... (Just a silly project name with numbers in it) I dont think, i could name it Kaidran, because (IF this game reaches beta status in maybe 5 years) we want to make it commercial. And using something from this comic for commercial use is illegal (or something like that).

I'd say try making something in between, that looks paw-like but can be animated to hold stuff without tricks. A hand-paw, I guess.

yeah, the hand with the sharp nails should work  Not a bad model, just maybe a little lumpy. how many polygons is it?

That's nice what do you use to create the 3d models?

Polygons: 3800 (without mesh smoothing)
Maybe it looks lumpy, because of the missing fur.
I try to render the fur hair by hair (3 million hairs or so...) + texture.

multiple programs. some freeware and some demos. most of them just to convert the format into another to continue the work :)

Edit:
i still need to do some adjustment, but later the fur will look like this:
Image
problem:
for a 10 minutes animation, the rendering time will be over 7 days. And this is only one hand (;_;)

You can add some gravity to your fur, here it doesn't look realistic.

Ill add the gravity and the shaders at the very end.
currently im at the limit of my PCs performance

And btw:
I finally managed to color the fur, just by putting different textures on the model.
So i can easy change the fur pattern *happy*

And some bad news:
Im not allowed to upload this model. :(

But here is an deal:
After i finished this model and you like it, i could try to recreate the tiger (i think her name was flora) and upload this model (*.FBX - format) for you.
You can modify and animate this as you want.

We wont use tiger in our MMO. Just wildcats/humans, fox/human and wolf/human as a sub-race for one fraction. And thats why im not allowed to upload this fox. sorry. But flora also will be an good looking 3D model ;)

Looking back at the image again, I think you should make the arm a little thicker near the body. it seems a little small right about there. and the fuzzy hands look interesting :P

I have to agree with judah4 there.
Also, nice work. I've started taking 3d modelling too, so seeing this here was very interesting! xD
Fear is not "evil". It is to know your own weakness. If you know your weakness, people can become strong as well as gentle.

Hi, im back.

I was quite busy the last months, working on my website, an AI system, some databases and a Gameengine for seemless world generation...
But I managed somehow to redesign the 3D model.
The skin is just a test for the HaF (Hair and Fur) generator.

Renderoutput without HaF:
Spoiler!
ImageImage

as I said: The skin is ugly, but it worked for now...

ImageImage
The tail will be fully controled by the CryEngine 3 physics and collide with every object in the game.

Renderoutput with HaF (for Cinematic use):
Spoiler!
Image
Here I just wanted to see, how the Hair would react to 2 different skins with gravitaion.
Its a chubby fox ... damn! :/
The head skin is still missing, because im not sure about the eyes...
I dont want these manga eyes, but realistic eyes are to small.

Thats all for now.

BTW:
The Female edition is also nearly completed.
After both are finished, I'll start with the wildcats and wolfes and then i fullfil my promise and create Flora (based on the wildcat model)
for you and upload the .max file.

AND:
Sorry for my bad english. Its night in Europe and im tired =)
