Iron Knight
While not an anime I think this manga is certainly worth looking at. Sadly it didn't find a big enough audiences to keep it going but what is there was a fantastic tale of heroism and a good look at humanity in general.

Re: Iron Knight
Okay. Quick summary:
Teppei Ushizume is the son of a respected police officer who aspires to become a hero like his father. His idyllic life is shattered however when monsters called Goblins of all shape and size overrun his city and Teppei is horrified to learn the he is a Goblin as well. With his new found abilities he seeks reunite with those he cares about and learn what it takes to be a hero.
You can find the series here: http://www.mangahere.co/manga/iron_knight/ There was another one-shot called Goblin Night that was a far more grim version of the story.
