A friend of mine from China (he's an exchange student) texted me that he finally gets to go home tomorrow, after nearly two months of cancelled flights and quarantine rules.

It's been pretty tough on him so I'm glad he gets to finally go home.

I told my boss he's an idiot because he couldn't figure out how to NOT TOUCH the printer (he exploded the cartrage). My boss is nice enough that he laughed at it.

Also Snood. Because Snood always makes people smile.

Amazon, Google, Apple, and Facebook are all facing anti-trust investigations because of possible monopolistic sentiments.

Y'all have no idea how long I've been waiting for this.

Also, hockey is BACK!

So I was watching Shrek 2 with some friends (who, like every other human being on the planet, have NO IDEA I read Twokinds) and the part where the fairy godmother says Prince Charming found “a gender-confused wolf” in the tower literally almost broke me because my mind went straight to my girl Natani and it took everything in me to not burst out laughing (it’s like, 11 pm after a very long day) and say “yo, like Natani” (again, because nobody knows).

Anyways, I thought I’d share that so you can never watch Shrek 2 without thinking of Nat :natani: .

Well joke's on you I have never watched Shrek 2 in English! I prefer the Spanish dub.
The localization team choose a rather weird translation. Instead of "gender confused wolf" they say something like "A wolf of dubious gender". Implying they could not tell the wolfs gender. Now that you mention it the phrase: "gender-confused" is kinda hard to translate to Spanish, if you try something very direct: "Confundida de genero", it makes little sense and if you try to be a bit more elaborate: "Está confundida sobre su genero", well that is a mouthful and funnily enough in Spanish the adjective is gendered in that phrase. Si it kinda makes sense they decided simply say something else.

A lot of jokes can be lost in translation. So unless the translation team can replace them with jokes that work for the intended audience, it won't be as good as the original.

Occasionally they find a better one. In the French originals of the tales of Asterix, Obelix's dog is named Idéfix - an obvious (to sufficiently fluent speakers of French) pun on "idée fixe" - fixed idea.

In the English language version, the dog's name is Dogmatix. Which does the same thing and is also a pun on "Dog".

Localization is a very hard thing to do. When you actually try at least.
Language is a weird thing there is not necessary a direct correspondence of an idea on language A to language B. Some ideas might not be able to be expressed in different languages, some might have multiple ways of expressing the same idea and in any case some of the idea gets lost in the process. And that is before you consider all the cultural stuff you may need to translate.
I remember that in the Spanish dub for the batman cartoon bask in the 90's Bruce Wayne was renamed as Bruno Diaz. A name that would be more amicable for the intended audience.
Incidentally all Spanish dubbing you hear is not from Spain, very few thing use Spaniard dub. Most of the time you hear Mexican Spanish for dubs and such. Ironically the best, if i do say so myself, Spanish dubs come from Mexico

More on topic, A friend of my father taught our dog "die" where he rolls into his back and stays there. It's pretty cute.

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! It’s weird, ik, and we don’t have a fancy football game (because the CFL sucksssss) but it’s still thanksgiving.

Also I dropped a pen in my cereal yesterday. That was fun.

It.. reminds me of times gone by. My father has one, one of the original ones from the 80's. Total [censored]-box. In all honesty, the tach, steering, seats and fuel pump were the only things I can think of that haven't given him problems with it. 48k miles, and it's on it's third automatic transmission. The design was awesome, and even with the wrong tires, it handled like a go-cart. But literally everything else, from the front plate bracket to the tail lights, gave him problems in one way or another.

To be fair, it was absolutely stellar in the snow, and I got the chance to do some donuts in an icy parking lot once (lots of fun in that), and it drove fine that day. They're fun cars, when they work. It's just that they usually don't. Still. Stainless steel body FTW, you couldn't dent it with a hammer.

More on topic, it was sunny and warm, for the first time in quite a while. Aaaand I spent it watching anime, like a weeb.

Another comic has a fanfic about a DeLorean getting a ... well, rebuild isn't quite the right word...

The characters have some unusual characteristics too.
