Some buddies and I were just shooting the breeze, when an interesting question came up: What is the best way to decelerate with a manual transition? We came up with three ways:

1) Shift into neutral and use the brake pads to slow yourself.
2) Downshift as you slow down, going down one gear at a time.
3) Coast in the current gear until you are *just* about to stall, then shift into neutral and use the brakes.

Frankly, we were at this discussion for hours, and we still don't have a good answer. Any mechanically inclined peoples out there feel like lending a hand?

Brakes. They're heck of a lot cheaper than a new clutch.

It depends......depending on the road that I am on I either downshift and brake (the busier roads) but if im on a road that isn't to busy then I go straight to neutral and brake.

I use both at the same time so it doesnt create as much wear on either component.
