Two small questions

#1 Post by bluespart »

Two questions I've been having for a while now.

1. Is there a way to assign a password to specific file/dossier?

2. I recently stumbled upon my old copy of M.A.X.: Mechanised assault and Exploration. After trying to install it, I realized the game is refusing to run, and shows me a black box with white text (I know these have a specific name, but I can't remember it right now, I'll post a screen later.). Any one knows what could be causing this?

For the password thing for files, I would say right click it and go to properties, then go to security and edit the settings and such. Not sure how to actually put the password on, but at least that is a star.

For passwords for specific files/folders - well, on Windows there is an old trick - you create a new Admin account, disable it so it won't appear on logon screen, and then you give him access to the file, and you uncheck full control for your account. The password for the new account is the password for file - This works in theory, never actually tried it...
The best idea is to find a good program for securing files - but again, they sometimes go crazy...
But why do you need a password for specific files? Maybe it's a better idea to encrypt it, and use a strong computer password? That's the solution I use on my computers.

The first one's pretty much been answered, but I'll need more info to answer the second one.

How old is the game, exactly? And what OS are you running?

I'm running Vista. The game was published in 1996 by Interplay. It's an old turn-based RTS.

Alright, I wouldn't be able to tell you how to do it, but I'd suggest running the game in compatibility mode. Windows 95, or 98 would probably work.

Yer gunna need to download the Dos Box or your game just wont work on Vista, believe me my dad tried the same [censored], most games produced before 2000 require the DosBox to run on vista.

I had this problem once - it was caused by a CD security system (Anti-pirate).
You can try to disable UAC (User Account Control) feature, it might help.
And if it doesn't - DOSbox.

Okay. I got DOSbox. Problem is, I don't know how to ask it to run the Instal.exe of MAX. So close, yet so far...

EDIT: Let's be more specific. I'm trying to install the game through DOSbox from the CDRom, D:\. I'm trying to install it in C:\OLDGAMES\MAX. I'm trying to install it through DOSbox becuase the game is 16 bits (I think. Well, that's one of the error message I get when I try to install it normally)
