Computer troubles

#1 Post by KyeRaor »

A couple days ago while I was at work and my sister was playing games on my computer. It crashed and would not properly start back up. I'm not sure if it was the game she was playing or some friggin' virus but my computer is not usable at the moment. When I turn it on I get an error that appears like this:

TRAP 000000000006 ==========EXCEPTION=========
Following by a bunch of, what appears to be, quite random characters and digits.

I've tried putting in the windows XP setup disk, and I've looked through the set up menu, but there's nothing that I know of that will work.
Any tips or suggestions? Or am I forced to wait until I can pay a professional to look at it?

Something like:

Code: Select all

TRAP 00000006 exception TR=0028 cr0=0000000011, cr2=00000000, cr3=000000000 GDT limit=03ff base=00017000 idt limit=07ff base=00017400 CS:eip=0008:08000000 ss:esp=0010:00061fec errcode=0000 flags=000100012 nocy nozr intdis down trapdis eax=0000110c ebx0003001d5 ecx=00001660 cdx=534d0030 ds-0010 es=0010 edi=00350000 exi=00051db6 ebp=00061ff0 cr0=00000011 fs=0030 gs=0000
?

A quick search shows two possible things:
a) RAM going bad, or
b) Corrupted boot files.

To test the RAM, download Memtest86+ and let it run overnight. Or, if you don't have access to a CD burner, do process of elimination and leave 1 stick of RAM in, see if that works, try the 2nd stick of RAM, and so on.

For the corrupted boot files, try a repair install of XP. I'm guessing that you didn't get through to the repair option because you have to select install before it'll give you the option to repair.

What I would suggest first is grab a copy of a Ubuntu/Fedora live CD, and boot off that. It should give you access to all your files, so you can at least back them up to an external drive or something like that. Then you try fixing XP. And because you have all your files, you might be better off blowing everything away and reinstalling XP from the ground up. :|
