Twokinds Industrial: Mana Crystals and Smoky Skies

#1 Post by SirJahar »

The year is 1827:
As outlined in the OOC thread HERE, this intended to be a tech/magic setting that takes place in Menkhan over 1300 years after the current story (as of this writing).
I will take on the roll of the manager of this game, loose as that term is being used, and portray the vast majority of the NPCs and locations, letting the other players take the spotlight.
That said, allow me to set the stage:
Part the first: Raid on Westspruce
It seems quiet in the westernmost town in the Templar's territory. which is to say it was the ideal time to launch an assault on the small port town. The Confederate attack force, a team of twenty men clad in the finest leathers the Assassin's guild could obtain, are perched on tree branches overlooking the town. It is half-past midnight, the guards are sparse. It is time. They rush down from their hiding place, and run into the town, scattering to take out ther targets. the dock master, the governor, the stablemaster, all get two-man teams. The rest are split between houses and the Inn.
They stalk from room to room, one to a room here, slicing throats.
Until they find the armor of a basitin light spear man.
And his spear.
In another room, the wolf there stops when he spies a Basitin-style sword.
Another is struck to halt by the shape of a violin case, and moves to open it before dispatching his next quarry.

In the governor's manor, the guest room is occupied, a foreign dignitary, with the trappings of being from the north.
It is a quarter to two, and all the assassins have spotted something of beauty or value that has caused the to stop and consider some not-so-light pilfering.

The Basitin had already heard the assassins coming thanks to his Basitin hearing and took the liberty of 'borrowing the innkeeepers sword. Without a word he silently creeps out from his hiding spot...behind the door and brings the sword swinging down on his target. Without time to armour up, the brown-furred Basitin grabs his spear and places his head against the door to try and hear what's going on. For all he knows, the entire town could be out to get him. This is Templar territory after all.

Templars...

If it wasn't for his own government deciding he should be here, Edmil Frostpaw believed that he wouldn't be here at all. Half the time, he expected the Templar scum to murder him in his sleep. And, he believed they would have, too, if he wasn't representing the White Republic here, who the Templars probably believed would take some pretty drastic action if they discovered that he was dead, part Keidran or not. Everyone in the North was wolf and human, to some degree or another. Besides...He believed they got their sick kicks otherwise, by letting him see their many Keidran slaves during the daytime. He wasn't sure he could handle it anymore.

It was unreasonably early in the morning...But, he was still up. He couldn't help but think of back home, wondering what the fools of the council were even thinking by this. Maybe they just wanted to get rid of him, but, couldn't do so any other way without his older brother, the Lord Frostpaw, taking stronger objection than he actually had. Surely they couldn't actually think anything could be gained by this visit...Could they? Well, there /had/ been rumors of the Templars actually acquiring slaves of Snow Wolf Keidran blood...Perhaps he was meant to find them. But, in all honesty, he believed the council was simply being ineffectual, and had no real idea what do with him...

However, as he sat on his bed, his right ear went up, as he could have sworn he heard something. Something not right at this time of the night...

He quickly turned off his light, grabbed his longsword, moving to sit on the floor against the bed, on the side not facing toward the door, holding his longsword horizontally behind view of this side of the bed, as to make it harder for any would be assassins or thieves to see. Slowly scootching toward the bottom of the bed, he tries to angle his head to get a better view, yet also hide his ears and head if he can.

One of the few merchants willing to travel into Templar lands had requested an escort, and Keers had answered the call. Westspruce was the intended destination, and having arrived there, Keers' contract was over. She got paid, she drank her pay at the inn, and rented a room for the night.

She wasn't entirely sure what time it was, but knew from the creak of the carefully-tuned floorboards that someone had entered her locked room uninvited. She reached for her sword at first, realizing as her hand grasped thin air that it was on the other side of the room. Keers recovered excellently, however, rolling out of bed with her rifle trained on the intruder. She was still a bit buzzed, but the rifle's barrel didn't waver as she worked the bolt, chambering a round and making a better warning than she could've at the best of times.

She grinned sardonically behind the sights.

After being hired to travel half way across the continent to do something little as delivering a package and then having the client bail on the payment, the Adrakist was not in a good mood.
Rikter spent all night pacing in his inn room pondering how to get back, every now and then muttering something like "idiot" and "doesn't recognize greatness." His brooding came to a halt when he heard and saw his door opening. He swiftly gave the intruder a good kick in the face (I'm assuming they're crouching) and yelled "Don't you know how to knock? Let me guess, you wanted a peek of an adrakist. Sneaking into one's room is not the safest way to do that." Something about the intruder made him realize it wasn't here just to gawk. Rikter sighed and prepared to strike with his claws if that hunch was correct.

Baelorn’s first thought as he heard the door creak was why someone was creeping into his room in the middle of the night. He opened his eyes, and as he did another thought immediately followed.

Is that a knife in their hand?

His breath caught in his throat as he watched the intruder, the pale moonlight barely outlining a wolflike form. Keidran. The hell is a keidran doing here? The knife he was holding left him with some unpleasant ideas, and his heart rate sped up a bit as he slowly removed his bed covers and groped for a weapon on his stand. Unfortunately he left his pistols by his boots on the far side of the room, only one of his daggers available for him. Of all nights. Bloody brilliant, Bael… Taking a shuddering breath, he crept out of bed, silently moving behind the would-be assassin who was now hunched over his violin case. He readied the dagger for a stab, but a creak from the floorboard made the keidran whirl around and face him, their eyes meeting for a moment.

[censored]

The wolf snarled and dove at him, sending them both to the floor with its knife aimed straight for his throat. He managed to get an arm underneath, the blade grazing his flesh and making him wince in pain. He slammed the hand against the floor, throwing a right hook into canine face. The attack caught him by surprise, but Baelorn couldn’t put much force behind it from his position, and the wolf growled and returned with a punch himself. The blow had Baelorn seeing stars, his grip loosening on his dagger and allowing the assassin to free his own. He went to strike at his throat again, but the former Templar soldier caught his hand, the blade less than an inch from his throat. The keidran snarled and pushed down with his other hand, the blade lowering until its tip was barely touching the flesh of his neck.

With a cry, he lifted one of his legs in a swift kick, driving straight into the assassin’s groin. The wolf faltered and let out a pained yelp, giving Baelorn enough time to fumble for his weapon and thrust it straight into the canine’s jugular. With a gurgle, he clutched at his throat, falling to the side and giving several gasps through a torn windpipe. He lay still after only a moment more, a puddle of blood already forming. Baelorn sighed and slowly stood up on his shaking legs, bracing himself against the wall for support.

“Ow.” He managed to choke out.

Zachary hadn't gotten much sleep that night, but this didn't bother him. He had spent most of the evening casting his line into the calm, coastal waters. Staying near the coast was a good choice, it gave him plenty of opportunities to fish and clear his thoughts.

Zachary now sat in his room at the local inn. Despite the fruitless efforts of his fishing excursion, his equipment still needed a good cleaning. As he untangled the line of his fishing rod, he noticed the sound of creaking floorboards coming from the hall. This didn't strike him as odd, it was probably just a fellow night owl. Then, he heard a faint jingling noise coming from his door.

Was someone trying to break into his room? He threw his belongings into his bag and quickly grabbed his shoddy broadsword. He thought to himself "I've managed to make it this far without having to use this, I hope that doesn't stop now." He hoped that this was some sort of mistake, or that it was just a burglar whom he could simply scare off with his sword. However, after hearing one final click come from the lock, seeing the door fly open, and finding a wolf charging in, he realized he wasn't so lucky.

The wolf lunged at him, but he manged to jump out of the way. The wolf crashed to the ground, and Zachary tried to make a break for the door. This wasn't going to work, as the wolf quickly turned about and grabbed Zachary's ankle, bringing him down to the floor with him. Zachary tried to swipe his sword at the foe, but the wolf managed to stay just out of reach. The wolf reached for a dagger, and went to plunge it into Zachary's back. In desperation, Zachary took one final, desperate swing at the wolf. Luckily, he managed to scratch the beast's face. As the wolf reached for its face, grasping at the open wound, Zachary took a broad swipe at the enemy, ending his assault.

Now that he was no longer in immediate danger, Zachary assessed the situation. It was possible that this wolf was alone. Maybe he should go out into the halls and check, to be sure. Then again, there could be another three wolves waiting for him, and no amount of luck would save him from that. However, staying in his room could make him a sitting duck. Decisions, decisions...

Samantha was looking down at the carnage from the outskirts of the town, tied to a sturdy branch where she was sleeping. Was, for she had dropped her rifle and immediately picked it up. At the moment, through the artificial scope she made for her rifle that had been heavily modified, watched from the sidelines. She would see some small action, or spot an open window and someone dying; but nonetheless she kept quiet. She is not going to shoot in an foregin territo—

"W-woaah! Umf."

She guessed the branch broke off. That was the fourth time that day. Looking up, brushing off branches and leaves from her red and black fur, she saw that it did.

The assassin facing Crowley yelped out in pain before he crumpled to the floor, the blade rammed through his left clavicle and down through his heart. He lays there, dying as the blood stops flowing, the light fading from the world, and the basitin filling what's left of his vision as all goes black. His dagger clatters to the floor, and a not falls out of his left paw.

Back in the guest room of the governor's manor, the one wolf has split from his companion, the other headed for the master of the house. The one Wolf looks around, sneaking over to the bed, and drawing back the sheet and hsi blade, only to find the bed empty, but the undersheet obviously laid upon. someone is here. He knows it, and now, he is determined to find them. He begins to look around. A flash of white fur catches his eye in the moonlight.

in Keers' room, a very young, very inexperienced, and very naive assassin decided to ignore the warning of 'the vial sorcery of a bang-stick' and charge in, swinging his blade wade to try and come up under her arm. He slashes her across her chest, nod getting past the muscle, as the muzzle of the gun is fer enough out to prevent him from getting a good blow. He grins right back at her.

"A big lizard?! This has to be a joke!" He shouted as he rubbed his muzzle. His dagger was pointed down is his hand as he got in his stance for a knife fight. He jabs at the scaled man, grunting as he did. "I won't lose to some freak like you!"

The ruckus caused from the other rooms makes it clear that this is not a single attack, but at the least several foes are in the building.

A patrolling guard thinks he hears a snap, and then a shout. "Run. Run now and I can go home before the sun comes up. Please don't make me look for you." He has better things to spend his time on than chasing some fox.

In his own room, Markus is working well into the night. He didn't know how late it was. Frankly he didn't care. He had gotten in touch with a woman in town who was looking for a new gun, and needed it by the next day at noon. He didn't ask why she needed it. she could be looking to murder her husband for all he cared, it was that she wanted a breech loading pistol in .44 that intrigued him. As his door opens, he jumps, fumbling the gun in his hands. As it hits the floor, the hammer is forced forward, his bad habit of doing final tuning on a loaded gun pays off, as the bullet goes into the other wolf's gut and lodges itself in his spine. His eyes go wide from the pain. Markus meanwhile grabs the nearest blunt object and hits him over the head. The assassin falls to the floor, crippled, unconscious, and bleeding. "Well. if it fires, I just need to tune the sights." He huffs as he sits next to the door, panting.

The Basitin, upon not being attacked within 30 seconds, takes the brief window of opportunity to suit up in his custom armour. Barely noticing the note, he reads over it quickly..."[Pier number two? Hmm.] The Short Warrior exits his room with a brisk combat ready pace.

"<Come on out Assassins! I know you're not dumb enough to think it'll only take one Cuddly fluffball of a Keidran to defeat Crowley! I could take on twelve of you with my bare hands! I am a warrior!>"

The boastful Basitin sets on his path down the hallways of the Inn to the exit.

Blast it. He was fairly sure that this intruder-Who appeared to be a full keidran from the shape-might have just noticed him. Well, he supposed not being noticed was out of the question. Time for a less than honorable plan. Turning around, holding his longsword in his left hand, he slowly started to get up, looking like his grip was loosening up on his sword, that he might have been about to drop it intentionally...But, then, he grabbed a hold of the top sheets with his right hand, and then flung them toward direction of the intruder. He now began to grip his blade more tightly, before then moving to hold it up in both of his furry hands, rushing toward the foot of his bed, despite his slight limp, and then moved to do a two-handed thrust with his blade, toward what he believed to be the intruder's mid-torso.

Keers grunted as the knife bit into her flesh, but turned with the slash and brought the butt of the rifle up and into the assassin's chin, knocking him back. Judging by the crunch, it probably broke some teeth, if not his jaw. Perhaps she was more inebriated than she initially thought, typically the wolf wouldn't have been able to close even the few feet between them before she pulled the trigger and ended his life. But he had rushed her, and actually landed a cut. It wounded her pride more than her body, but still.

Before the wolf could recover, Keers pressed the attack, bashing the rifle's stock into his face again, fracturing something and knocking him down. She maintained her sardonic grin as once again the rifle's barrel was trained on the now-prone form of the assassin. This time, however, Keers was the first to react, and pulled the trigger. The lead slug fired from her rifle tore through the wolf's chest and the floor, unyielding until it struck the inn's stone foundation, where it came to rest.

It's possible that shooting him wasn't the best way to go about it, Keers mused, working the rifle's action with graceful alacrity. The noise alone should wake half the town. A few heartbeats later she heard another gunshot from nearby. A pistol, from the sounds of it.

Ignoring the blood pooling around the would-be assassin, she strode over to the door and relocked it to keep any other assassins at bay for a short time. Keers returned to her bed, snatching her sword on the way, and started tearing the sheets into makeshift bandages. Not the cleanest, most likely, but she'd used worse and wasn't afraid of infection. Being a Basitin had some benefits, at least.

Once her wound was dressed, she would don her clothing and gear before heading out into the hallway.

"Lizard?" Rikter said, blocking the blade with his scaled forearm. "Freak?" He said, as he sliced the attacker's face with his claws. "I'm going to be a dragon! You should show some respect next time you meet an Adrakist... if you survive, because I'm going to love tearing you apart." He spat fire in the wolf's face and leaped in for the attack, clawing at him like an angered animal. After a short scuffle, the wolf was ended with a quick slice of the jugular. He gets up and sighs. He talks to the dead body. "Blood is so hard to clean off my claws you know? It's going to take for ever to clean them." He goes over to his bed, picks up his rifle, slings it over his back, and heads out into the hallway.
Sure, someone may have sent the assassin after him, but he had a feeling this was a larger operation.

Alright. Head’s okay, cheek’s bruised, arm’s gashed… He eyed the wound, still bleeding. Didn’t hit a vein at least, thank the gods. He couldn’t help but chuckle thinking about how his troupe’s manager, Mrs. Dawson, would react to it, likely fussing over it like she would a child’s scraped knee. Good ‘ol Dawson…

...Wait, Dawson. Bloody hell, the others! Got to make sure they’re okay.

Bael quickly went about gathering his things and tying on his boots. He was wiping clean his dagger and fitting it into his boot when he heard a racket from outside. What in blazes… He went to the door and slowly creaked it open and spied a furry form clad in armor bellowing down the hallway in some sort of Keidran. Another wolf? No...wait, that’s a basitin. Great gods above, is he trying to get us killed?! He paused for a moment to think, debating if he should try to shoot him. For all Bael knew, he could be working with the failed assassin, though it didn’t make sense why he’d be blowing their cover so inconspicuously. Keeping a hand on one of his pistols, he stepped out of his room with his violin in tow and spoke to the warrior in a hushed tone. “[Basitin, quiet!]”, He hissed. “[Do you want to kill us with your noise?]”

It was impossible to ignore the noises coming from the other parts of the inn. As he heard a loud bang, he thought to himself, "Was that a gunshot? You've got to be kidding me!"

Zachary knew that this spelt trouble. Staying in place was not a good idea; he had to get out of here. Going out into the hall still didn't seem very appealing. Any number of things could be out there to kill him. His attention turned to the window. He opened it, and took a look down. Considering this was the second floor, it may not be wise to drop down that far. The last thing he needed right now was a broken ankle.

With that option ruled out, Zachary figured that his only way out would be through the traditional exit. However, if there were anymore obstacles in the hallway, there's no way he'd be able to fight through them. He realized that there would be only one way to get out of here alive. He would need to run like hell.

He looked over at his bag. Despite not being too incredibly heavy, it would still weigh him down. The same thing was true of his broadsword; he would need to carry as little as possible if he were to get out quickly. Reluctantly, he put the sword in the bag and dropped it out the window.

He finally settled on a plan. As soon as he got out of here, he would retrieve the bag and then sprint for the docks. If he was followed, he figured that he could simply appropriate a boat.

He wouldn't go out into the hall completely empty-handed. He grabbed the fallen wolf's dagger, and stuck it in his belt. He did realize, however, that if he actually needed to use it, he was basically dead already.

Finally prepared, Zachary took a deep breath, and bolted out into the halls.
