Sylvi just pegged the big [censored] right between the eyes, and dropped it to the floor. Yes, stone-cold dead, right there. However, that does not make the rest of the birds back off.
There's an initial wave of shock that comes over Sylvi as she stares intently at the tail end of her projectile, now deeply embedded in the terror bird's forehead. There's just a cocktail of emotions which comes across as a mixture of euphoria, pride and a sense of awe (The "Holy [censored] I can't believe I did it!" feeling you get sometimes  ) , while also maintaining the stress and fear she'd felt though out the encounter thus far.

She continues to stare until the alpha female slumps to the floor as a motionless corpse, only to refocus her gaze on the remaining terrors which snaps her back to reality quite quickly.

"Aw... Hell..." she grumbles. Yes, she'd wanted to enrage these beast into an attack, but not all of them at once...
Phaing wrote: Instead, they go a little mad, and charge you from three sides. Two are right up front, and one each are trying to flank you. The stairs make that difficult, but these birds are so tall that they have a shot at it. Lets see here...
Nah, the flankers are nothing to worry about.

However, up front, one of them gets past the spears and the shields to land a gory hit on some poor fellow wearing a red shirt. He's bad, but not dead. In return, one man up front and another behind him manage to wound that Bird just as badly, forcing it to back off.
(I feel I will regret this...)

While Sylvi had initially accepted that there was bound to be some losses in this plan of her's, she'd failed to anticipate just how witnessing such things would affect her.

She does something stupid...

Sylvi, knowing the wounded man would perish without aid, abandons her comfortable position in the forth line in order to help save him. She shoves past the man in the third row before firmly bringing her hand down upon the next man's shoulder. "Drop the weapon, and pull him back! Keep pressure on the wound until I get to him!" snarling slightly as she gives the order. She nods to the man behind (Third row) with a bestial look in her eye. "Move up!"
Phaing wrote:This also means that there is a gap in the shield-wall, but no Bird in position to take advantage of that yet.... but there is a fifth Bird hanging back, there just hasn't been room for it to get in there until now.
She positions herself now firmly in the freshly made gap in the front row, eyeing off the 5th terror. Sylvi tosses her spear into the arms of the man behind her, leaving her ultimately weaponless in the eyes of the monster.

She never steps beyond the range of the pikes flanking her position, moves forward just enough to entice the creature in. Her features take on their more bestial appearance. Growling, snarling, her ears rigid and pulled back; typical things you'd see in a wolf making a territorial challenge.

Assuming the bird takes the bait
Spoiler!
As the terror bird charges toward Sylvi, she promptly pulls out the trinket containing Sven, whom she summons in a flash of cyan light, both blinding the creature while also bringing forth a fully grown elk charging forward at this terror bird at near 70km with his impressive antlers poised to do some hopefully serious damage.

Gently, he will move Annaria to one side and shrug to let the Princess know she needs to leave him for a moment. Ramius sees the frozen lock and also won't waste time with it. Instead, he drives his two-handed sword through the bars and between the halves of the window. With a twist, he pops the window open. There is little noise or fuss, but before he can take in the view he goes "OOOFF!" and is yanked into the bars by his grip on the sword. "What the hell?!"

Annaria will be able to see that a Bird was out there, not a huge one but still larger than a man. Somehow, it leapt upwards and bit down on the flat of Ramius's sword. He dare not let go, this is the only weapon he has left that can kill one of these monsters. Face hard up against the bars, he looks at Annaria and grunts; "Help... me."
Picking his pockets, the former Princess passes two of Raimius's throwing daggers to Annaria and says frantically; "I'm out of pee, do something!"
She suddenly had a look of panic after being asked by both to be the one to do something. She swiftly grabs the daggers and attempts to do the only thing she can think of that will help. She tries to position herself where if she were to stick her arm out the window it will be above the bird. "Keep the blade steady if you can, I need an immobile target." she says to Raimius.

The plan is simple; drop one of the daggers point down and hope for a reaction. When she gets the dagger in position and ready to drop, she will try to put some force into the drop as well; something between throwing and dropping.

"Please let this work." She says quietly just before dropping the blade.

You did not get an eye, but the dagger lands without being able to do much damage. It lands on the bae of the beak, making the Bird roar in pain and release the sword. Raimius can't get in an attack as the Bird drops to the ground, but he does recover without falling down and says to Annaria; "Good job!" The Bird runs off towards the forest, squawking and shaking its head. "VERY good job. You owe me for a dagger."
He winks if she takes that seriously.
"Now, where exactly was that movement that you thought you saw?"

The right flank is going well, the one on the far right is wounded again and so is the one on the right front, badly. However, the one on the far side takes one of the men with it, literally. Shield and all, it hauls him bodily right over the railing and slams him to the floor and before he can even scream... DRT.

As for Sven -
He appears, and is going too fast, bursting into the battle like a meteor and missing the Terror Bird with his antlers ... somehow. The Bird is too surprised to hit back with any effect, and the both of them go tumbling away towards the ice-wall.
One of the rag-tag soldiers standing next to Sylvi remarks; "Did you mean to do that?"
The one behind him kicks him in the rump. "Aw shuddup, we're winning aren't we?"
"Are we?"

OOC; we will be moving along at this pace from now on. If you don't post within 3 days of my last post, I will no longer guarantee that I will wait. This story will move along, one way or another and the active players will be given priority.
Period.

She couldn't contain her excitement for actually doing something to one of the birds by yelling out of the window "<take that you...>" and I'm sure you can guess the last word.

Her attention is brought back to the inside by Raimius' praise. "Well, I think we're even since I just saved you and your sword." She said before being reminded of the reason she brought him over. "Oh yeah, it was over there, by the treeline." She pointed to said treeline. "But it looks like whatever was there moved."

Firstly, with all the casualties plus the guy to drag away the wounded man, you no longer have a 4th rank. The men are doing the best they can with their poor spears, but with every good hit they seem to get a little shorter. At least they are doing a reasonably good amount of damage. Two of the three birds remaining are pretty bloody, and as for the one Sven is fighting...

Well, it would be pretty comical in another setting. Sven tries to bound to his feet, but the Bird has wrapped its beak around his neck. The sharp tips are past where they could dig into his flesh, and the Bird really isn't trying to bit down. It is using Sven's strength to help haul itself upright. Not having useful arms can be a handicap at times...
Sven is having none of it. He whips his body around so sharply that the Bird is sent spinning around a full 360 degrees, and then some. The Bird cannot keep it's footing and does another billy-flop. That fall saves it's life for a moment; Sven's antlers go wiff right over its head as the Terror Bird hits the floor.

Meanwhile; two men at the left do good teamwork and kill the Bird on that flank. All that remains for your men to fight are the two wounded ones on your right.

(Sylvi did not notice the situation that develops below}

The stupid bird runs off and there is no sign of whatever else might have been out there. "Is it really possible that only eight of those monster Birds caused so much havoc?"

Rita already sounds a little bored as she starts to say; "Maybe the rest aren't hungry any.... LOOK OUT!"

Lead by Clint, three armed men are rushing you from behind. Two of them are going at Raimius with spears, they would have gored him in the back it it weren't for Rita's scream. He gets his sword around to block them just in time, but he is still up against two men with weapons that have a longer reach than his own.
At the same time, Clint dashes at Rita with a shiv in each hand. She backs into a corner, terrified and holding her knife in both hands. He is looking at her the same way the men were looking at your Gold coins earlier, and says; "Yer' mine now, Princess. Don't fight or I'll have to hurt you."

(yep, these are some of the guys who were sent to prison for a very good reason)

None of these three men consider Annaria to be any kind of an issue when it comes to a fight.
Were they right about that?

She swiftly looks behind her after Rita's alerting of the incoming men. The men were too fast getting into positions for her to try to stop them.

She did, however, warn then she was armed.

She pulls out both of her daggers, her main one in her right hand and the key dagger in her left, and rushes towards Clint. If the other two are near the path (since I don't know who's where, if they're not in the path then she does nothing with them) she will attempt to cut the back of their thighs as she runs past, but her main target is Clint. Upon reaching her target she will leap onto him, preferably on the back, and press one of the daggers' point to his neck in more of a threatening way instead of going for the kill right away. "Don't move" She will say with a growl into his ear.

James had been doing his best at keeping tabs on everything going on, and had been assisting with the wounded, waiting to step into the phalanx if it started to dissolve. Which is exactly what started to happen, at least in the rear, as the wounded piled ever higher. He had just finished pulling one of the wounded to the top of the stairs and wrested the spear from his grasp when he spotted Clint and two other men going down the hall where Raimius and the girls had been.

With a curse, James dropped the spear and followed them. With the din below he didn't have to worry about being quiet. But neither did they. He wouldn't be able to give warning until he got a lot closer and by then it'd be too late.

He arrives at the scene scarcely a second after the two men's first clash with Raimius, which was unfortunate. If he was a half second sooner he might've been able to slip past and engage Clint, but now the two spearmen had the hallway almost entirely blocked. At the least, he was behind them, which gave him the opportunity to even the odds. His approach was fast but cautious of the scuffle.

Slipping behind the spearman on the right, James aimed a savage blow at his outer knee with the iron bar in his left hand. Using the momentum from the swing, he turned into a sucker-punch directed at the man's nose. Or, more accurately, behind it. He continued the movement with several backsteps that should put him next to Raimius, facing the remaining spearmen. Although at a half-turn, ready to disengage from them and go after Clint.

Ahhh.... so this guy really is a fighter.
That was a very good hit with the bar, the guy screams but does not go down, and fended your punch off with his shield... by accident {ehh, you might wanna have Sylvi look at that hand when you get a chance}

What you did turns the tide. Raimius is able to go over to the offensive. He kicks the shield of the other man with a spear into a clock-wise spin. That a problem with long shields; leverage gets problematic. Raimius jabs the tip of his sword through the man's forehead, that's a kill, it gets stuck there and he can't pull it out again.

Oh, man, do they ever. Three man impale the Bird at the same time and keep it pinned until it dies.
As for the other one...

The frost on the floor made it pretty slick here, and getting jostled by the soldiers as they did a wheel-left made Sylvi into stumble-bum #3.
The Bird's kicking feet pass so close that Sylvi can feel the wind on her face. Sven has had enough, the bird is down and he is up, so the heck with the antlers. He leaps up, and comes down on the Terror Bird with all 4 hooves. And if that wasn't enough, he just rears up and comes down again, and again, until the damn thing is dead.
At last.

OOC
The next turn is liekly to have little for Sylvi to do. But stay tuned for more complications.....

Being pinned to a wall is a bit of a problem. Since he doesn't seem to want to give up she takes advantage of his sudden burst of weakness and goes for the stab, no matter how awkward it is from her position. "That's vixen to you."

(Sorry, couldn't think of much to do while pinned to a wall. Just an attack and a terrible one liner.)

James grunts in acknowledgement of the pain, sparing half a glance at his hand as he stepped back. Well, it could've been worse. He could've gotten his hand stuck in the spearman's face, like Raimius' sword. Wouldn't that be amusing?

Turning back towards the remaining spearman, James thrust the iron bar in a feint low on the man's right side (Assuming he's holding the spear in his right hand and shield in/on his left.), banking on the recent injury to worry him into overextending to defend his right side. Assuming the feint succeeds, James follows through with a quick blow aimed at the man's shield arm, and will continue with another swing directed at the unfortunate spearman's head.

(Could've used a bit more to work with, but I think things will work out alright in the end.)

At last.
Sylvi, now aching from being slammed to the ground, grimaces as she pulls herself upright with her spear embedded in the thin layer of ice she’d neglected to notice before. She mumbles a curse at herself as she raises to her feet, spinning her upper body in a stretch in an attempt to alleviate some of the dull pain.

She very carefully makes her way over to Sven and the remains of the terror bird, her claws very purposely digging into the frost with each step.

She admires Sven’s bloody work (and depending on just how clearly dead this thing is, she may jab her spear into its neck or heart to be sure), giving the brute two heavy pats upon his shoulder. “Good boy...” she mutters faintly. “Good boy...”

With the threat now removed, Sylvi turns her attention to the survivors. Judging from all the noise upstairs, there are multiple shouts and bellows coming from what surly must be the injured and dying. (She’s completely oblivious to the fight upstairs.)

Sylvi wipes the sweat from her brow and shouts out to the few remaining men who were still lingering around the corpse of the last bird they’d brought down. (I assume there was at least 3, but if there’s more I guess she’ll have them go in teams). “I need someone to check the birds. If they so much as twitch, put a pike through its heart.” Her tone is harsh and orderly, and she makes a sharp wave with her left hand to imply she wants it done immediately.
“I need a runner up stairs to assess the wounded. Take notes their condition and report back ASAP.” again, she motions her hand in the same manner, but this time pointed towards the top of the stairs.

“Anyone else; you’re going to help me go over the bodies.” Her voice is softer this time; more defeated and sombre, and her sluggish movements mimic this. “No matter how badly they might look, there’s a chance one or two of them mightn’t be dead yet.” She pauses as she begins to go through her medicine bag in preparation for their grim task. “Let’s get to work.”

You tried a complex series of moves, and it did not work out all that well. The feint appeared to work, but your opponent is a tricky S.O.B. He turns the tables by catching your bar between his shield and spear and succeeds in disarming you!
At the same time, Raimius frees his sword from the dead guy. "Raaahrrr!"

The man you are fighting decides that discretion is the better part of valor and tries to run away. Tries, and is foiled by his bad knee. He still tries to hobble away, his shield-side to you. It would be easy for you to catch up, but without a weapon...
Raimius sees something he does not like, and does something unexpected; he puts his magnificent sword you your hands and says "End him!"
This guy, we can call him Bruno, is halfway down the hall. If he can shout something confusing to the rest of the Prisoners.... you could have chaos on your hands.

(not a bad line at all)

And, a good stab it is. However, it hardly matters...

Annaria suffered no damage from being slammed into the wall because there wasn't much force behind it, and Clint is dropping to the floor like a :potatoes:
The reason he is, and the reason Raimius is coming your way, is because Rita jammed her dagger up under his chin and pushed the tip right up into his brain. It didn't stop until he hit the top of his skull. She is standing there, not falling with Clint because she let go of the dagger when she saw what she had done... arms and the front of her coat covered with an impressive amount of bright-red arterial blood.
A high-pitched keen is coming from her mouth through clenched teeth, starting out quietly but rapidly increasing in volume. Her face is as white as a sheet and her eyes are bigger and rounder than you have ever seen them.

Raimius goes to his knees and skids to her side, putting one arm around her and calling her name, but there is no reaction.
He is not sure what to do, or even if there is anything he can do about this. He is looking to you, Annaria, pleading with his eyes for you to say or do something that will help Rita in this moment of crisis.

One of the toughest of them says to you; "Fights over, who made you Gen-"
BLAP
"Hey!"
Bruce is standing there with a bloody & swollen ear (one of the hazards of standing next to men who are using slabs of wood for shields) and snarling at the loudmouth. "The fight won't ever be over for you unless you do as yer' told, got it?" He puts his spear back up vertically and nods to Sylvi. "Right then, lets finish the birds off like the boss-lady said. And what happened to the lamps up there? I thought...."

A glance up at the galleries shows that they are empty, and once the last of the birds is dead there is the sound of a scuffle up at the far end.
Oh, and speaking of the far end, the Ice wall is melting. It is not important just yet, but a few chunks are falling off. The odd thing is when a chunk falls off, it stops melting.
Weird, ain't it?

After Clint dropped, it takes Anaraia a moment to realize it wasn't her stab that was the killing blow. After seeing the dagger in his his skull he turns towards Rita. That is when she sees Rita's expression, notices the sound she is making, and Raimius trying to comfort her. She rushes over to help.

"Hey." She starts rubbing Rita's back. "Don't worry. He was a bad man and you did what you had to do. I was in a very similar situation once. Remember back on the ship we met on, I told you about almost getting captured by a Templar? I did the same thing you did." She sighed, realizing this story may not help. She wrapped her arms around Rita for a hug. "It'll be alright."
