(Finally got this done with Rookie S:P )

The bell rang in front of Malcolm's store again, but this time, instead of a customer or a patient, a wolf, which Malcolm should be familiar enough, popped through the door. He glanced at the empty counter.

"Hey!" The Kiedrian shouted quite loudly, at least enough for Malcolm and Tobias to hear from the backroom.

"Malcolm? You there? I went herb-hunting again, and I got a few pretty good finds this time!" A dull thud could be heard a few seconds later.

"Whew. That sure was heavy." A slightly audible mutter came after a moment of silence, then a sigh. "I sure am out of practice these days."

Malcolm had only just re-entered the back room when he heard the bell ring and Quentin call out.

"I'm back here. Hold on a tick."Malcolm called back, pivoting on the spot and heading back out to the shop. "Morning, Quentin." Malcolm said, heading behind the counter "What have you brought me today?"

Malcolm pulled on the string tying the bag together, causing it to open, spilling it contents out in the counter. "Let me see." Malcolm said quietly to himself as he quickly sifted through the herbs and plants in front of him. "We've got some blindweed, some butter brush, a nice big stash of Frozen Lavender..." Malcolm went on the list each of the 23 herbs presented to him, sorting the ones he was interested in in one pile and the ones he had no use for in another.

"Right, over all this is a pretty solid haul." Malcolm said happily. "I'm not sure if I can give you anything for the Chetty roots or Fox tongue, however..." Malcolm paused as he carefully picked up one of the green and red thistles, spouting a blue flower. "I'm offering triple the usual price for the Jester Nettles. I've no idea where you found this, but it shouldn't be in season again for at least another seven weeks."

Malcolm reached under the counter to retrieve three bags of coins from his safe. "I'm thinking... 20 gold, 200 silver and... 90 copper for this lot. Seem fair?"

"Yep. That should cover everything I need for the next two weeks." The wolf said as he scratched the back of his head, before pocketing the hefty bags of money. "It is starting to get a little harder than usual to get jobs, especially from humans, with all those anti-Kiedrian sentiment coming around." He shook his head. "But anyway, speaking of that, a wolf with pretty strange markings, strange even for me, came to our town just a while ago. He apparently created quite a commotion at the bar. Weapons were drawn, but good thing that no one was hurt." He grinned. News do travel fast at Ridgegate. He thought. Especially when there are Kiedrian and humans involved. "He had quite a lot of gold on him as well. A rich wolf. Not pretty common these days."
"Anyway, what got you all busy? You are always at the counter at this time." He said.

Malcolm shrugged "You know the usual. I'm just finishing up helping a customer with some stuff." Malcolm paused a moment as he lifted the deceivingly heavy bag of herbs off the counter and into a cupboard. Straining his muscles as he did. "Bloody hell... You weren't exaggerating about this thing." Malcolm scoffed.

The wolf helped Malcolm lift the heavy bag of herbs up by giving the bag a boost. Once the bag was seated safely on the shelve, Quentin wiped his head with his sleeve and took a drink from his water skin.

"Now, where were we?" Malcolm muttered to himself, scratching his chin. "Oh right, the Basitin." he said snapping his fingers "He seems a nice enough guy. Shame we don't have more of his kind come through this way, eh? I bet'd they'd have the most amazing stories to tell."

"A... A basitin?" The wolf exclaimed, nearly choking on the liquid he was drinking. "Can I please go meet him? I..." His enthusiasm suddenly ebbed as he seemed to have thought of something, but the gleam was still in his eyes. "I mean... I have never met one before, and I've only heard of them in books and such, and I really wanted to see one in person..." He lowed his head, seemingly in embarrassment.

"You'll have to ask him yourself. We're just waiting on results for a test now, so he's pretty much just in the back waiting. I'm sure he'd enjoy the company." Malcolm said cheerfully.

"Potato, potahto..." Lei had muttered to himself, mentally shrugging when Phaing went through the trouble of correcting him. Same pronunciation, different lettering.
His role as a listener didn't fare too much better. The most he managed to catch was the general subject and not the details. Those went in one ear and right out the other. Maybe they didn't catch his interest...

"But anyway..." Phaing began, looking just a bit irritated with the lack of satisfactory response. "If I heard your earlier mumbling correctly, you were upset with yourself about how you handled everything, but right after that you came across to me all brave-ish, as if I what I was doing didn't matter so much. How do you do that?"
And the weird thing was her tone, as if she was asking for tips on cooking or some such thing. At least her annoyance hadn't bled into that.

And only now did he snap out of his little daze.

"I'm more used to dealing with humans. I hadn't been lying when I said I didn't like wolves. Not in a "ew lock them away" view, but more of "oh masks don't let him tear me apart". The wolves were never the most peaceful bunch to begin with, and now with these recent hostilities... I don't know when one will suddenly decide it's fun to tear an arm off!"

It was only reluctantly he had ended up following her to the baths. As he feared, it quickly turned awkward for him. He wasn't about to just stand there while a young girl just stripped in front of him, and his glasses were hastily removed before he saw too much.
Just because she wouldn't turn her back to him didn't mean he was going to stare right back at all times, he'd already gotten a good enough summary of her physical state while he was fumbling with the door and a red face, and spent the rest of that conversation right outside.

Many life choices were indeed questioned. However, Oalei thanked his lucky stars that nobody had come along to question what he was doing.
He didn't want to be thought of as some kind of pervert, lumped into the same category of individuals like Vaughan. Ugh.

Phaing was quick to notice her conversation partner had left, looking all sorts of flustered. To this, she only gave a little shrug.
"Funny town, this. First place I've been where drawing a weapon didn't get me in trouble right away, or at least a bunch of mocking cat-calls. And now this happens."

True enough, Lei left and is trying to continue the conversation through the door. As Phaing suspected, she must be looking as lousy as she feels. Why else would a healthy young man duck out like that? She has cleaned herself up just in time... hm, hopefully. She has been seen already, better put in some serious effort with her mini-makover. Rummaging around in her pack, she finds one dress that can be folded into a tiny package and yet shaken out ready-to-wear.
Almost as if it had been designed for this sort of thing.

"I wouldn't the one to talk to about that, I just saw my first Wolfen a few minutes ago, and you were there. Looked more to me like its the Humans that are the mean ones ... story of my Gods be damned life."

Her voice is pitched to carry through the door, and then some. They could probably hear her halfway down the alley if there was anyone around the corner.

"Have you ever been a slave, Lei? Trained for it since you were just... nevermind. What I'm saying is that if there is one Great Truth about the Human Race that I have learned, its that we save the very worst of ourselves... for our very own. Always have, always will. I'm here because I'm hoping that the Wolf-.... the Kiedran, are somewhat similar to us in that regard. Or maybe I can find a spell that will transform me into one of them, with lilly-white fur that is soft as snow. I bet people would look at me differently then.
Now...."

She is finished by that point in the conversation with the bath and changed into the dress as well. The door opens, and this is what you see;
Spoiler!
Now I can get rid of those other pics.
FINALLY, an accurate picture, and one that matches this comic's artwork just a little bit,
the difference is that she has her pack thrown over one shoulder, and a Sable wrap to ward off the chill in the air (what IS the weather like here?)
Image

(yes, still armed, daggers strapped to the inner thighs and calf)
",,,, what is this about 'recent hostilities'? Have these people decided to attack the Lupuses?"

She will look back and forth down the alley instead of noting Lei's reaction to her, and at the back door of the Tavern.
"I saw an place that looked like it may have a potion or two worth some gold, care to walk with me a bit? I'll cover a round of drinks later on."

[I'm not getting any images, Phaing. Just a single white pixel if I try to follow the Image URL.]

Oalei simply let out a sigh at the unfinished question, shaking his head with an expression he knew the girl wouldn't be able to see.
"Changing yourself would likely just make your situation worse, you know. And I've never been a slave, but I know how much the experience kills them inside. But enough of that subject, I suppose..."

By the time the door was open, his glasses were already back in their usual spot.

"In regards to who attacked who, it's been the other way around. We were never on the friendliest terms with the Keidran, and the wolves always seemed to be the least agreeable. I might be biased, but I don't recall when we outright attacked them. Pinewood was raided by the wolves not all that long ago, if I remember correctly. Peaceful town, didn't really do much. All but defenseless. They burned, pillaged, and killed. Now it might as well be war."

It wouldn't be the first time they brought innocent people into the bloodshed...
He had thought to himself, right hand hovering over his left arm for a brief moment before he realized what he was doing.

Clearing his throat, Lei then decided to put that thought out of his head for a while, adjusting his recently recovered hat and robe.
"I've got not much better to do... I suppose I can spare some more time."

She smiles, its a little bit of a surprise to see him agree to this. Nicely surprising that he would w/o any additional demands.
Come to think of it, Humans in this area aren't so bad, and that Keidran was a pretty grim one. Maybe Lei is right about them... the Wolves at any rate.
Time to go find out.

"Thanks Lee, I appreciate that. 'Specially with those mean boys still on the loose. The place I wanted to check out is down this way..."
She looks left and right, and up at the roof tops. "... yeah, down this alley and we should be right around the corner from it."

Phaing has one hand busy holding her haversack over her shoulder, and the other is busy with that Sable wrap. So, she sticks out her Elbow to Olei, and waits for him to slip his arm through it.
And if he does not, if he just looks at her arm, she will indeed tell him what she thinks he ought to do.
"If'n yer gonna be my escort, should at least look like you don't want to let me get snatched away by some big 'ol brute, right?"

That's her interpretation of that custom, apparently.
...

It is a well-appointed shop, with greenery in the front windows and we might be able to catch a glimpse of someone moving around farther back in the shop.
"Shall we?" She asks Lei, turning towards him on the doorstep so that she can check out the streets, looking for anyone that might be following them. Now... she is not unpleasant to walk with and will talk about anything at all, but she also has no concept of Personal Space. She rubs up against the poor fellow every other step, leans in so that her face is nearly touching his when she speaks, and has no idea (or concern?( that this might make him uncomfortable.

"Alright, I REALLY hope these guys don't remember their last sight of me." She looks to Lei and shrugs. "I'm awkward, socially-speaking, sometimes."

Instead of plants, she will be looking for Potions this time, the kind that heal or have other helpful effects on her own self.
((and Yes, you can put a couple of words in my mouth to get that rolling, I am not hyper-sensitive to anything they call "god-modding", especially if it helps the story))

Oalei had muttered something unintelligible to himself before reluctantly taking Phaing's arm with his right.
"I'm a guy with glasses in good-looking clothes accompanying a small girl in a fancy-looking dress. It's like we're begging to get robbed."

And he immediately began to further question his decisions when the girl in question kept shamelessly rubbing up against him like a Keidran in heat.
Whether it be due to lack of nerve, or believing he had the ability to endure for the short distance, he hadn't demanded she put an end to it. He did, however, look increasingly flustered to the point his discomfort would've looked blatantly obvious to anyone else.

He had made small talk, mentioned that Ridgegate had apparently been Snow Wolf territory before it became somewhat "Neutral", possibly due to it's close proximity to Ditteridge. And speaking of snow wolves...
"Yeah... Remember what I said about the wolves? That applies mostly to the forest wolves, it seems, not the snow wolves. We really don't quite know their stance yet. If people keep acting up, though..."

The crimson-haired man had gone silent at this thought, and as Phaing continued her search, he became increasingly thankful that he had such a wide-brimmed hat, one that he could tip slightly and (hopefully) hide his now red face in the shade it provided.

"Snow... oh, yes, snow. White, so Snow Wolves are called that for being white? Forest Wolves are something else... but, not like the Black and Gold one we saw earlier, right? I wonder what HE really is. Seemed to be something mystical[ about that one."

Satisfied that nobody is taking an interest in them (but in such a strange town, who can be certain?) she breaks contact with Olei and moves around him like a snake slipping around a rock. Phaing opens the door for him, standing just inside the threshold with her back to the door itself. Flat to it, so Olei can get past her without brushing her front too terribly much.

"Hello there?" she calls out. Not loud so much as just pitching her voice again. "This poor guy seems to have a touch of the fever, do you have any Potions there that can help him? Healing, curatives, something like that?"
And if Olie meets her eyes, the Ghost of a smile and a slight shrug is all he gets in return.
Yes, she noticed, that brim won't help much when she is shorter than you are. And since he is so obligingly flushed for no apparent reason that she can think of, why not take advantage of it? Anything that takes some of the attention away from herself can only be a good thing, especially in a strange new land.
Logic, don't you know.

(Sorry it's a bit rushed.)

Malcolm noticed as the two strange arrivals wondered up to the shop. Curious as to what exactly he was looking at. "Well, they're a bit odd..." Malcolm whispered to himself as the customers entered the shop, one of which looked strangely familiar.

"Excuse me, Quentin." Malcolm said, turning his attention to the front of the store "The basitin fellow is just in the back. Go introduce yourself, and I'll be with the pair of you shortly."

Malcolm tightened his tie and quickly dusted his vest before heading over to the new customers. All the while he had this niggling feeling that he'd seen the girl somewhere before.
Phaing wrote:"Hello there?" she calls out. Not loud so much as just pitching her voice again. "This poor guy seems to have a touch of the fever, do you have any Potions there that can help him? Healing, curatives, something like that?"
Annnd that's when it him. This was the girl who bolted from his store earlier that day, spouting some strange babble as she did. "Who's this she brought with her?" he thought "Clearly they're close. Lovers perhaps?"
Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

"It's more because their territory is, generally, absolutely freezing cold. At least, that's my theory..."
Oalei conveniently "didn't hear" the part about that golden black wolf his newest companion was speaking of. Just thinking about that experience was depressing.

He promptly passed Phaing when he got the chance, doing his best NOT to have any further physical contact.
Upon seeing another human that wasn't the small girl, he all but sighed with relief, putting on a little smile. ...Which then began visibly twitching when said girl had implied he was suffering from a fever.

"I'm perfectly fine, actually. I'm just not used to this colder climate... Should be fine so long as I don't stay out long." That was Lei's excuse, and he was going to stick with it.
He then cleared his throat, looking around the establishment. "I'm going to browse anyway, along with my... Companion. And would you mind if I asked some questions in the meantime? I'd be lying if I said I wasn't interested in medical knowledge..."

Malcolm, waved nervously at his new customers as he grew closer to them. His eyes not leaving the shorter woman as she stood beside the equally strangely dressed fellow. Though she seemed a little more composed than before, Malcolm was still waiting for the unexpected.

"Well I guess that's alright." Malcolm said as he stood before the strange couple. "We have a wide variety of potions and tonics over on the wall here, and I can probably mix you up a special order if need be." pointing over to the wall of bottles on display. "Was there anything in particular you'd like to discuss?"
Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

[Sorry about the painfully short post.]

"Nothing much." Oalei had cheerfully said in response. "Right now, I simply want to know what sort of methods go into creating these tonics. I'm sure the process must be fairly complex. Perhaps you might also have studied healing magics?"
It was then that he pulled out a somewhat thick journal, opening it to an empty page as his excitement seemed to grow. "It's something of a hobby of mine, you see. Magic always manages to fascinate me..."

She rolls her eyes and wanders towards a glass counter off one side. Men are men, after all, she lets Olei do the talking. Its NOT a matter of being upset with him in any way, she knows that culturally women are not expected to be leaders.
.., and truth be told, she has been using Lei a bit, why not let him take care of his business first? He's been accommodating, if a bit stiff. And that is stiff in the literal sense of the word, rigid as a board when she made herself available for the customary grope or pinching that is such a part of her dealings with men. Perhaps he is not attracted to her, and Phaing can see why, she wouldn't care much for a scrawny little thing like herself either.
But his stiffness, if she could she would hire a masseuse for him, before he seizes up completely.

With that she puts him out of her mind, for the time being.

And she can put the time to good use; she has a look around at all the wares, no neat and so delicately arranged. Yea Gods, what mad fun it would be to ... no, best not even think of that sort of temptation.

There is a conversation going on in the back room, more people are back there, another reason to stay on her best behavior.

Phaing can vaguely sense the shopkeeper is also paying attention to her while talking to Olei... that's a bit rude, why would he do that? However, it will give her an opening to ask ; "I too am interested in Healing potions, or something of that sort. Might say I'm accident prone. Hiya, they call me Phaing. Having trouble making out the labels here, what-all do you's have here?"

She tries to smile nicely, and shows the same ignorance of personal boundaries to this man as she had with the other one.

Malcolm blushed at the sudden breach of his personal space. "Please, miss!" Malcolm said taking a dramatic step back. "If it's all the same to you, I'd prefer to have some space to myself, alright?" trying to sound professional through a broken and embarrassed tone.

Malcolm looked back at the pair, clearing his throat before he began to speak again. "I wish I could help the pair of you, however you must realise that this trade is my lively hood. I can't be willing handing out my recipes and skills to everyone who ask. Not for free anyway."

Malcolm looked back at the young man's book. The pages were a bit old a worn, clearly they had seen some use. It reminded Malcolm of himself at one point in his life, trying to learn all there was about medicine and the healing arts.

Malcolm let out a slight sigh, "Perhaps I can teach you one or two things." he muttered "They may be simple, but it might just save your life one day. Anything more and I'll have to ask to be compensated for my time. Understood?"
Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Now you see what I had to deal with...

Oalei gave the healer a sympathetic look at his sudden embarrassment, mixed with a small amount of amusement.
His expression then immediately transformed into one of what seemed to be pure happiness when said healer relented, offering to teach him something.

"Of course, sir, I completely understand. Just give me a moment..."

From within his robe, the crimson-haired scholar pulled out two things. A quill, and a thick bottle that contained a respectable amount of ink. The bottle he set on the nearest shelf, taking care not to disturb said shelf's contents.
"Perhaps I might indeed compensate you... But, uh, before we begin, might I know who I am learning from? My name is Oalei. Can you tell me yours?"

His gaze then shifted over to Phaing. "But first... I don't think you answered her question. Might want to fix that, before she thinks the question's being ignored and promptly explodes from sheer impatience. Or something."
