A World Asunder, Mission 1 Section 1: Mechanized Warfare

#1 Post by y7h65 »

While the crew compartment was sealed off from the combat compartment, the action of several spears penetrating the front of the crew compartment did not go unnoticed as the bone like material punched through the front of the armor and the driver before being halted by the compartment wall. Despite having several six foot long bone poles sticking through her chest, the driver failed to release her foot from the gas. As a result the APC continued forward before hitting a bump in the ground and losing all illusion of control. Swerving wildly, the vehicle managed to avoid several other shots before smashing into the frame that once held a massive pair of airtight bunker gates wide enough to accompany three tanks side by side and almost three times as tall as it was wide; the two slabs of metal that had once kept the bunker safe now casually pulled open. Momentum and physics did its job and the vehicle bounced off the denser and heavier frame into the former waiting hall with the front compartment crumpled, skidding off the frozen ground before slamming into what had once been a forward position built around a tank for the defenders; now a half-eaten grave marker. This second impact brought the vehicle to a halt as red emergency lights lit up on the inside of the combat compartment.

Even as those inside the combat compartment recovered from an experience not too dissimilar from a bad trip through the washing machine a series of loud detonations brought them back to the world they were in. The three exit doors, one on the back and the one on each side between the commander compartment wall and the benches of the crew compartment, were ejected via explosive bolts; a measure used only for emergencies. As the cold bite of the air swept into the combat compartment a voice crackled over the internal intercom.

"Well folks," The voice, the gunner if you recall correctly, said with a light brevity that clashed with the noise of electrical crackling and leaking fluid prominent in the background of the intercom. "It seems our drive to the Alps has been rudely interrupted. I'm afraid you'll have to find another way back. Driver and commander are dead here and my legs are pinned. The auto-cannon on the RWS is still responding and I might be able to get a few shots off. That should draw their attention."

At that, an electronic swerving noise filled the silent combat compartment as motors spun the turret on top of the vehicle to target a hostile. The familiar cracking sound of a mass driver cannon firing rang out, quickly followed by another shot, and yet another shot; the interval between each shot decreasing with alarming speed as the sound of large heavy fleshy objects hitting the ground got closer and closer.

"Out." With a quiet hard voice, Jason's command echoed over the command net, his lightly armored form already jumping through the back exit of the stricken APC, his right eye glowing bright red. As his feet hit the ground, his WRATH was already in his right hand and a pistol in his left, the blade arcing silver as it cut down a grotesquely warped and changed human body that had been firing at the armored vehicle with an organic funnel like limb that had once been a right forearm. Before the dissolving body finished splattering to the ground in a blackish grey mess the pistol muzzle flashed multiple times as several rounds were fired and became superheated against the friction of the air. In the distance, the sound of metal striking and bouncing off metal could be discerned while static and occasional radio chatter from unintelligible human voice filled your ears.

A quick peek outside the three open doors confirms the worst. The vehicle managed to get roughly halfway inside the entrance to the vault, a massive semi-circular holding room easily twenty five meters tall and a seventy five wide, before being stopped. The ground floor is filled with destroyed armored vehicles and defensive positions, most of them covered in thick layers of ice that obscured detailed but managed to preserve and enhance form. Catwalks running on the walls and crisscrossing overhead laid in shambles, portions of them lying on the ground in ruins like a collapsed skeleton. The exterior blast doors, ripped open, allow you to see the massive hole where Section 2's APC had fallen through the thinned ice from the left hand exit of the vehicle. The right hand exit, on the other hand, revealed a pair of smaller blast doors to the inner working of the bunker about thirty meters away. Easily five meters by five meters the actual doors themselves appear to have been left open, the entrance not too dissimilar a dark portal. The room is quiet, the howling of wind and snow the only noise present.

Sadly, the silence is broken by another burst of fire from either the cannon above you or Jason and you return to the mission at hand. The cursory glance around the room, while detailing the rough layout of the area, also revealed the shadowy forms of countless human sized and shaped Doppelgangers backed by roughly the same amount of insectoid shadows. Already a multitude of the shadowy forms were moving, a few of them being cut down by cannon fire or halted by pistol fire, and beginning to block off possible escapes. However, the entrance further into the bunker had the lightest amount of resistance. Roughly two dozen warped humans, still clad in the power armor that was meant to protect them with firearms made of flesh and bone where their right forearm had once been, and a dozen beetle like monstrosities, roughly two feet tall by six feet long with massive serrated scissor like jaws opening and closing in anticipation for what was to come, stood between the stricken APC and the entrance into the bunker. However, more were coming from holes and tunnels in the wall and the number both in the room and between the APC and the entrance were slowly increasing.

"This position cannot be held." Jason's voice crackled over the comms, the voice a bland monotone as he cut a charging turned human in half and gunned down another beetle like monster. "Strikers and marksman will provide cover fire while scouts and riflemen secure passage and entrance. Then remaining members shall move while the fireteam at the entrance provides cover. There is no time for disagreement, perform your duties now."

(OOC: In other words, get your roles done and feel free to slaughter as many Doppelgangers as you please for this opening round of posts.)

The outdoors always seemed as an outlying and final beauty to krimstad even before the attack began. However his mind did come back to focus when he buckled down early and soon went through the APC's premature stop. The scene seemed blurry, "ugh, that could have gone better" Krimstad thought as he exited the vehicle easily his vision returning to him at the sound of cannon fire from the APC. Looking around he already saw the destruction and ice before his eyes fell on the doppelgangers and shadow insectoids. his ears rang as his comms buzzed what the gunner was saying.

Krimstad reached to the pole arm on his back, its blue color showing more in the cold than its original black hues its blade arcing on one end easily showing his weapon being a scythe. He spun the scythe as if testing its weight once more before turning to attack an oncoming doppelganger, the momentum easing his next movement of drawing his pistol and firing at another oncoming doppelganger behind Jason. He looked around seeing the doors that entered deeper into the bunker thirty meters away before hearing Jasons order buzz on the comms. "Roger that Commander, Jameson follow me there's an entrance thirty meters away" Krimstad replied before heading in its direction.

As he moved towards the doors he was already a spinning mass using his momentum to cut down doppelgangers with ease that dared to approach and attack him, each attack that connected became a counter rotation to the next target as he closed in on the doors. His fight changing as his scythe collided into one of the insectoids chitinous armor, with a loud hiss it began to swing only to be stabbed through the chest with the other end of the scythe and flung away. In this movement Krimstad used his pistol to kill three more doppelgangers and arrive at the doors. He looked inside whilst pulling his pistol next to his head to shoot another doppelganger behind him. He then turned around scythe at the ready as the doppelgangers began approaching him. "this is krimstad, commander I am at the entrance to the bunker, inside seems clear" Krimstad said as he kept a large circular area of space in front of the opened entrance doors as he fought the mixed group of doppelgangers and insectoids. His scythe arcing with deadly precision around him.

Laughing was the last thing Argonz remembered. A light laughter that was his own as he joked to perhaps relieve the tension; He didn't even remember what the joke was, the sudden crashing tended to put those things out of mind. He'd have said a word or two for the lost soldiers, a quick 'rest in peace', perhaps, but there was little time. He had to act, and now.
"No frying pan, just the open flame. Lovely." He said lightly as his heavy body hopped out the back, landing with a rather loud thud as he prepared his WRATH's melee form, holding the halberd in the right hand as if it were a hand-axe, and his LMG in the other hand. Briefly, he wondered if any action movie heroes had wielded the weapons he did in this fashion, before immediately refocusing on the task at hand. A lack of focus got you killed or maimed, after all.

Immediately, he stepped forward, thrusting out with the pole-arm, impaling a vaguely humanoid doppelganger in the abdomen as it pounced at him like a wild animal, possibly with the intention of taking him by surprise, to tear him apart with wicked curved blades about four feet long replacing the forearms; To be honest, the rest of it was rather lackluster in comparison. Lifting the creature into the air, he turned the shaft over in his hand, which in turn flipped the doppelganger over, and with a wide overhead swing, smashed it head-first into the hard, cold ground. And for good measure, he put a few rounds of the LMG into it's head.

"Orders received, initiating cover-fire." He said upon hearing angel boy's orders, putting away the LMG as he modified his WRATH. A few moments later, and he was packing the auto-cannon form of his weapon. It was a pity that the bulky weapon was ill-designed to be used one-handed, no matter how strong one was; It simply wasn't effective, no matter how [censored] it seemed.

His part was simple. Cover-fire, then advance when the time was right. His WRATH was intended for covering fire, so there was little confusion on what role he'd play in the orders given, despite the defender never being mentioned in said orders. As he opened fire on the enemy, firing rounds capable of blowing lesser doppelgangers to pieces in a few solid hits and punching holes in some of the larger ones, Argonz couldn't help but grin.

Kierra had long since taken the advice of the many soldiers she'd served with, and had slept through the entire APC trip up until shortly before the crash. Not that she was actually tired, she just expected to get little sleep from that point on, so she got some while she could.

After the APC skidded to a halt, she took a brief moment to look over the others for any external injuries. Seeing none, Kierra exited the APC with rifle drawn, firing controlled bursts at the closest Doppels. Her movements were very fluid and precise, almost machine-like. During a slight break in the enemy forces, she took a quick look around, including the ceiling. Always be wary of ceilings, she'd learned. Nothing at the moment, which was good.

She responded to Jason's orders with a simple "Affirmative."

Folkstad had run ahead and was now separated from everyone else. Not exactly the brightest tool in the shed, but it was her obligation to try and keep him alive. Her left hand slotted her rifle into place on the back of her Frame whilst the right drew her now rapidly unfolding WRATH, cutting down a charging beetle-like Doppel in the process. She began approaching the entrance, and Folkstad.

"Jameson, on me!" She barked out over comms, unaware if he had yet to exit the APC. "Folkstad, hold position. Retreat into the hallway if you can't hold the door, but watch your back."

As soon as Jason gave his orders, Alex nodded and flipped down the lid of her helmet. She jumped out of the APC to land beside Ivan and Kierra and moved slightly ahead of their position to sight out any particularly dangerous Doppelgangers. The compound camera on the front of her Frame sparkled with cautious-orange and concentrating-blue as it flicked between infrared and standard vision. She extended her shield into the carapace of an approaching zombie-like doppelganger and kicked it away, slicing through it as the shield extended laterally over her arm. Pulling out her sword, she parried and cut off the arm of another which got too close, then delivered a quick series of slashes which crippled it.

As she looked around the bunker's entrance, she shuddered. It was obvious from the sher size of the entrance alone that this was never intended to be breached from either side. You could probably take a landmine to the walls and they'd hold. She shuddered again. Whatever it was that managed to get inside, she hoped it was dead or gone by now. She wouldn't want to try facing that thing, even with a team.

She backed up to hold a position near the APC with the others already outside. "No unusually dangerous Doppelgangers to report at this moment, sir," she reported to Jason through her radio. "A small part of me hopes it gets more interesting later," she whispered to Ivan on another channel, optics flashing joking-cyan.

Even with the combined firepower of a full team of Hunters, the numbers of the Doppelgangers attacking failed to thin or reduce by any significant amount. If anything the numbers appeared to have increased by a small bit and the size of the shadows approaching are increasing ever so slightly, a sign of worse things to come. To complicate matters Doppelgangers had also begun to drop down on the group from the high ceiling above. While most missed their targets and landed to close to a Hunter instead, the amount dropping down on the group had increased to the point that the autocannon on the armored vehicle was now spraying upwards to give the Hunters breathing space from surprise Doppelgangers. Unfortunately, the diversion of this heavy weapon upwards meant that even more Doppelgangers were left unmolested on the ground floor, leaving the hunters to deal with the surge of Doppelgangers with only their weapons. It didn't take a genius with an education from an officer school to see that the position would collapse any second now.

Although Ivan opted to rush to the other side with the rest of the scouts Jason failed to make a comment or otherwise order him back to the APC even though the loss of one of the heavy weapons in holding off the swarm around the APC was beginning to show as the swarm edged forward rapidly, trampling over or devouring their fallen comrades in the moments before the bodies turned to sludge. As the ahead team finished moving next to the door and began mowing down the waves of Doppelganger, Jason motioned them forward with his sword as he covered the rest of their advances with his handgun.

After the last of the team had made it across, he paused and placed a hand on the crew compartment of the APC. Those of you with exceptional senses can make him out saying something quietly but after that he dashes over to where you are, crossing the distance in a blink of an eye as thrusters on his back activate and hurl him across the short distance. Landing on both feet gracefully, he rises and begins to head towards the tunnel as the APC continues to provide cover fire. He pauses at the gate, looking at it and noting the layers of ice having jammed the door open.

"Botsch," Jason said with a flat tone, holstering and sheathing his weapons before entering the entrance as he spoke. "As soon as the team has entered the tunnels, I require you to fire on the crew compartment of the APC and then the central section. This should detonate the fuel and ammunition, providing us with some cover. After which, shatter the ice preventing the door from falling with your WRATHs melee form. Everyone, into the tunnel before we are forced to leave you behind."

"These things just keep coming don't they" krimstad thought as he swung his scythe in its deadly arc through another insect like enemy. He had cleared the area for a moment only to see the next wave in greater numbers, he slumped a bit at the sight before rolling backwards as a larger doppelganger landed where he was a moment ago. It wielded a bone like weapon before charging krimstad in full force and swinging madly. Krimstad took a few shots at it before his pistol made a clicking sound signalling it needed a new energy clip or to cool down. Seeing no other time he used the staff end of the scythe and stuck the charging threat. "Everyone, without much support and the increase in numbers I'll be able to hold this position for another few minutes tops. Whoa!" Krimstad said over the radio as he dodged another bone like weapon that sailed passed him.

As Argonz prepared to advance upon seeing the ahead team reach their destination, he quickly swapped his WRATH's form to the melee one. He took off at a sprint, activating his jump jets seconds before contact with the growing number of Doppelgangers. He was launched forward at an incredible speed, lashing out at any enemy in reach as he all but flew across to the bunker doors. Or, more specifically, the doors that was Krimstad's current position. The man did imply he needed assistance, after all.

Upon landing, he stumbled slightly as he skidded a few feet on the ground. It didn't take long for him to notice his comrade Krimstad fending off more of the accursed monsters. Wasting no time, Argonz switched his WRATH once again to it's ranged form, taking aim at the Doppelganger with the bone-like weapon in it's hand(?), which I'll temporarily refer to as 'Boney.'

One short burst of gunfire later, and 'Boney' was blown to pieces. 'Boom, headshot.' Argonz thought before turning his attention to the rest of the Doppelgangers.

After reaching the door, Kierra set about keeping the immediate area clear with Folkstad until the others arrived. It was easy enough to accomplish. She'd yet to get a response out of Jameson, and hadn't seen him leave the APC either. But this was no time to worry about him. If he was unresponsive he was either dead or soon to be.

Once everyone who was coming got through, the Russian, Botsch, fired his rocket launcher at the APC, blowing it and many nearby Doppels to bits. She waited until the last second to slip through the door, her WRATH folding into itself as she disengaged from the enemy. Slotting its cleaver-like form into place on her Frame, she once again drew her rifle, aiming down the hallway briefly to assure that it was clear.

"I believe several of us can see in the dark, or have some form of alternate vision integrated into helmets, Botsch. I recommend one of us who can see unassisted should lead, and another bring up the rear." Kierra spoke in an even tone, utilizing the break in combat to check over her gear.

Krimstad kept holding his position until the leading commander got through the door seeing the destruction of the apc and after everyone was through he changed his wrath to its rifle form and entered himself before sealing the doors. Seeing darkness his senses heightened so hed know whats around him easier, his eyes adjusting to see a more clear picture while his helmet produced his own night vission without any use of exterior lights. After so he heard Kierras comment on the com.

"With your permission sir ill take point Iagree with kierra on this one.Decides we should continue moving that door wont hold forever" Krimstad said shouldering his rifle and reloading his energy pistol with another charge.

"Świecić", Alex muttered under her breath, activating her night vision. The hallway before her began to faintly outline in an electric ochre as her helmet's optical sensors mapped her surroundings. She swept her head around to face her current allies and the night-vision faded slightly to compensate for Ivan's glow. She glanced briefly at Krimstad when he asked for point, and was about to speak up, but decided against it. She made a point of staying within a few meters of him though - it might have been intuition; it might have been paranoia, but Alex knew firsthand that one of the downsides to being good at something was doubting the abilities of others, and she had very good vision. She didn't know for sure, but regardless, she didn't trust Krimstad to have the kind of vision he needed for point. That said, despite her composed attitude, she wasn't exactly thrilled about wandering head-first into an unknown tunnel full of eldritch abominations.

She checked to see her WRATH was in its gun-form and held it at the ready, turning to Jason. "Is there any intelligence or map data on the interior of this bunker, or are we on our own here?" She made sure to keep her eyes wide open as she waited to press ahead.

With an audible click, several small lamps came to life on Jason's armour, revealing the two by two meter corridor. Tattered, shredded, and faded posters lined the wall with some of the original encouraging phrases still visible. Shattered, dangling, and otherwise broken fluorescent lighting could be seen on the ceiling above while burn, bullet, and claw marks lined the ground and walls. In the distance the quiet howling of wind echoed out, carrying with it noises that you are fairly certain, or at least hoping, are only the result of air movements. With the lighting provided by Jason, the end of the hallway could be seen about twenty meters away, a quick walk, with a partially opened sliding pair of bunker doors cutting off the hallway from the inner area.

"Affirmative. Tringham, take both Strikers and Kierra with you to take point. I'll form the center. Marksman and riflemen, ensure that the door holds and that we are notified in the event it does not but follow closely."

With that, the group moved to the end of the hallway. Though the sound of clawing and ramming could be heard coming from the door, it managed to hold against the onslaught of Doppelgangers on the other side of the door. However, once the group reached the interior door, another problem became quickly evident. It appeared that whatever had opened the door last had forced them open, the act opening a space for things to get through but jamming the door and preventing it from being opened any more than it currently is. While there was enough space for an adult to fit in, it was unlikely that you will be able to fit everyone in, even if they weren't wearing armor and carrying weapons.

"The doors must be removed." Jason stated, voice calm as he began searching for one of the fuses. "Botsch, please attempt to destroy them. Otherwise, I must expend a demolition charge to do so and detonating an explosive in an enclosed space may result in harm to us."

As Jason inspected the door, Alex, for a brief moment, saw something move away from the other side of the damaged door.

"Hold up, wait!" Alex spat into the comms. "There's something out there.... It almost looked human." With a pop and a whirr, a hatch opened in the back of her helmet and a warning-purple orb floated out, racing through the entrance. It dimmed slightly as it reached the hole in the door, hesitated, and then entered.
The room is empty, just like the hallway. Judging by these posters and benches, it was some kind of... Foyer? Perhaps for displaced refugees moving to the bunker. Alex's vision moved in a circular pattern, its field of view rapidly expanding to cover the entire area. The thing is gone....

Returning to her proper state, Alex abandoned the orb in the foyer and turned to face Jason. "Apologies, sir, but like I said, I noticed a humanoid figure in the next room. It's disappeared, but I wouldn't count out the possibility of humanoid, even Changeling doppelgangers." I seriously hope it's not that bad, she added silently.

"Righty-O, sir. You heard the man, right this way". Argonz had said. And with that, he advanced slowly through the hall. Being defender and all, He'd be the shield when things went sour. Not literally, he hoped. As he moved through the quite frankly creepy hallway, he couldn't help but feel he'd made a grave error in not having a flashlight attachment of some kind. True, he already had a small, barely noticeable attachment to his helmet, and a handheld light somewhere on his person probably, but the damn thing was a bit too dim for his liking, and he can't hold both an autocannon and a flashlight at the same time. Maybe with some duct tape or something... Once this was over, he was going to request night-vision or something for his helmet.

The defender shook his head. Again, he was getting distracted. Damn it all, that was going to kill him one day... He'd just have to make do.

Upon seeing the damaged interior doors for himself, he had just one thing to say about it. "Either the guys inside got royally [censored], or... Ugh, apologies, no time for bad jokes..." Other than that failed and abandoned attempt to lighten the mood, he remained silent as he repeatedly scanned his surroundings, keeping his eyes peeled, checking everywhere from his twelve to six to everywhere in between. Oh, couldn't forget the ceiling, either, doppelgangers never seemed to expect people looking up.

Who said the doppelgangers couldn't blend in like chameleons? That's right, nobody. Times like this, a little paranoia here and there was justifiable, maybe even encouraged.

Krimstad backed slowly with the group he checked his sides with a slight turn of his head to check rooms, however most focus was on the door he shut. Upon hearing that a possible someone was seen he turned to face the unknown only to be false. Then he heard the thud of the rear door and refocused but saw no break yet. Then he tapped his helmet in a slow manner feeling he was being watched and with a low beep two lights on his helm dimmed to life lighting the rear, the door was dented now and with that the thought of holding seemed simple utilizing the hall as a bottleneck point. He went to a knee stance and readied his rifle. "I would estimate around two minutes untill door breaches and then aprroximatly 2mintues holding position here sir."Krimstad said.
