Comic for June 12, 2018: What Rose Knows
Well it's good to see Trace being proactive. But can't help but remember the time Nora gave us a backstory dump.

Well, if so, *I'm* certainly not going to complain about getting to hear Rose talk for a while. I wouldn't honestly mind some backstory anyway, I'm a total sucker for that stuff.Schrodinger wrote: ↑Tue Jun 12, 2018 11:00 pmWell it's good to see Trace being proactive. I agree, though, it's nice to see someone just spit it out and ask for what they want. There's been an awful lot of beating around the bush by a lot of people along the way. I know that drives tension and drama among the characters, but it's nice to see someone being straightforward once in a while too.

I wouldn't mind if it were more of a discussion and not an exposition dump. Maybe Rose could escort Trace around the manor and give some insight into his thought processes. So far we haven't seen how Trace himself viewed his crusade, only what has been shown to us from other people's perspective. Maybe that restricted floor has something interesting to see.MuonNeutrino wrote: ↑Tue Jun 12, 2018 11:18 pmWell, if so, *I'm* certainly not going to complain about getting to hear Rose talk for a while. An insight into the Old Traces' descent into madness after the death of his former wife. I'm both intrigued and terrified as to what's in store.

Looks as if Miss Rose is a little flattered by that title.
P.S. Am I the only one thinking that something bad may have happened to Flora? Nothing like instant and/or violent and/or painful death, more like she's been teleported to a private holding cell awaiting torture and or experimentation from Trace himself.
As am I. Especially after seeing one of his old security features in action.Elemental Templar wrote: ↑Tue Jun 12, 2018 11:25 pmHmm.....MuonNeutrino wrote: ↑Tue Jun 12, 2018 11:18 pmWell, if so, *I'm* certainly not going to complain about getting to hear Rose talk for a while. Re: Comic for June 12, 2018: What Rose Knows
"Miss"? Ech, weird...
Rose has been reacting like this ever since Trace returned, and is obviously not the old master she was used to. Part of it might be (as we've just learned) that she thought Trace was putting on an act. She still might not be 100% convinced he's changed.
The other part might be that old trope of an extremely well trained and highly mannered majordomo dealing with an unpolished nouveau-riche master who doesn't know how to properly address the servants. In other words, she's proud enough of her position to be offended when someone tries to be familiar in a way that's "just not done".
The way things have gone so far, one thing seems obvious - that Rose is very cynical. Given the things she's seen and the betrayals she's been experienced, it's not hard to blame her for not trusting anyone. She's had a long life and has seen a lot of horrifying darkness and brutality. One wonders if she has any desire or ability left in her to trust anyone anymore.

For as cynical and depressed she may have turned it's nice to see she can still understand when someone is really nice with her and that Trace may have really changed and now wants to actively learn his past to finally be able to fight it. Which will now put her in conflict with what Heuchre asked her to do... Tension coming!
Maybe she didn't had the choice...

what is she staring at in that 2nd to last panel, she clearly isn't looking at him, she's slightly in the foreground compared to him yet still looking straight ahead, that's some fricking shinning shiz right there if he isn't immediately alarmed next panel i'll be beyond surprised.

Re: Comic for June 12, 2018: What Rose Knows
I don't know about 'proud' or 'offended' so much as simply discomfited at something that breaks the usual safe modes of address. (Note the slight blush, which seems to me to denote embarrassment rather than offense.) Rose has lived among humans for about 18 years now, or over 2/3rds of her life, and from what we know has spent that entire time as a servant of one sort or another. It seems that free keidran can have a place in human society, but it also definitely seems that they're still regarded as distinctly second-class citizens at best in a society that doesn't particularly care for their kind. For people living under such conditions, particularly in a subservient social role such as a servant, breaking the social rules that they're 'supposed' to obey would be a dangerous thing. Being the nail that sticks up - for example, in the form of a keidran servant that gets 'above themselves' by being too familiar - invites being hammered down by the human-dominated social establishment, and so those social rules become more and more engrained among those keidran in the name of survival.Rafe wrote: ↑Wed Jun 13, 2018 5:02 am "Miss"? Rose knows all of this. In fact, we've actually even seen it explicitly called out in her interactions with Saria in the early pages of TDM, where she's quite concerned about the reactions of others if anyone saw her and Saria acting so familiar in a public setting. She's not so flustered here of course - not only is this *not* a public setting, but she's also older and quite obviously doesn't care so much what other people think these days (particularly given her practical power as Trace's seneschal). But the social conditioning is still there - those unwritten yet ironclad rules of address and behavior that spell survival for a keidran servant among humans. Even if there's no particular reason that they'd actually need to be followed in this particular case, acting against such long established habits of thought can't help but feel weird. It's indeed just 'not done', but not necessarily because it's offensive, but because it's potentially threatening to the social structures that help keep her safe.
Re: Comic for June 12, 2018: What Rose Knows
I'm not sure this is a good idea. I think Trace is poking a hornets' nest, by asking for this. This will not end well ...
