It's a british (or european, at least) thing; in numbers, the "," and "." are switched from their meaning in North America
(American way = 12,334,422.58 EU way = 12.334.422,58)
It's weird
It's European. I was in Munich (München is stronk! Remove Germoney!) this spring and they use the comma-period switch thingy. They also do it in Spain and Portugal, from images I've seen.
Here in Sweden we just put it all together without any comma:s
Is wierd but its the way we do it.
The communist part is a inside-joke with friends. :kathrin:

Finland uses (non-breaking) spaces, and the "European" comma to separate decimals:

5 503 297,17

In everyday use (outside of well edited printed materials), the spaces are often omitted:

5503297,17

Using the period, or full stop, instead of the spaces is not recommended. However, it is not strictly considered an error if it is required for practical reasons, such as hindering document forgery:

5.503.297,17

I would not be surprised if our set of rules had been copied from Sweden at some point. Our government authorities often do that if there is no specific reason to do otherwise. I’d imagine that also helps the interaction between the Finland-Swedish minority, prominent in several fields including the Finnish economy, and Sweden proper.

And, of course, all of this is not weird. Not any weirder than the multitude of different quotation mark traditions worldwide, anyway.

I'm kind of surprised THAT list isn't LONGER. It has two entries for English and one for Spanish. My Linux installation optionally supports 18 national or regional versions of English and 21 of Spanish.
