Because it is part of and furthers the story? Although I personally would rather see that Trace is alive, for my own reasons, I would accept his death if it makes sence and is important to the plot.

Yes. Yes, it would. Although in that case it might as well be one of the apprentices, wich would be pointless. Let's hope it's someone of major importance.

Flora could well have had an early birth after all the crap she went through.

Also, the doctor says:
"There is only one room with a human in it; it must be his ..."
His what? Baby? How would the doctor know that there is a human father without inspecting the baby?

And then: "the little one" and "the baby".
How would the doctor know that there is only the one? Keidrans usually have litters.

So, either magic were used to find out this, or the cat's literally out of the bag.

Just to play devil's advocate here: the doctor hasn't actually examined Flora thoroughly; for all we know, she's assuming that Flora is pregnant. We've all seen the sitcom scene that goes something like this:
"Oh wow! When the baby due!"
"... I'm not pregnant. :<"
"Oh... You're just fat. :3"
"RAEG!"

More or less like that...

oh, thats easy. they thought that *gulp* he is a guy. and after the doctor "fingered" out that his patient is not what he should be... well, a secret is a secret and he cant tell it to others

My answer(to highlighted are): Well Human seeds can really only do in about 2 eggs while the rest die off. Animals do give off multiple eggs, but its not a guarantee that all will get fertalized. Leaving the likely happening of Flora only gave one egg. and.....this hurts digging up past knowledge. Not even sure If i'm completely right. >_>
