Eh, I think it's simpler than that. Eric's a slaver, that's pretty clearly a slaver's tool. Like Drake, I expect that's him yelling.

Dude was Clovis's right hand, and is literally one of the people who just burnt a village to the ground. He's big, dumb, and loyal. I don't think there's anything that implies he is, in a general sense, nice.

Yeesh, what's with all the gnashing of teeth and proclamations that they're dropping the comic? Because a character died? People have been dying throughout the comic's run. This isn't some sudden turn to grimdark, this is literally how the comic's been running for a decade.

The question of what rose really is now keeps coming up. Completely missed Nibbs tail reflection, good catch. I don't think it's wispy though. Zoomed in, it just looks faint and run through with the vertical water texture. Don't get it. Best rational I can think of is that she actually does want a weapon to kill trace with, and an obedient slave bound to her sidesteps any remaining restrictions. As a learning tool it definitely seems worse than useless.
