Re: Linux

Hmm, anyone have any ideas about what might be killing Skype recently? I'm running 11.10 Ubuntu Netbook version, had skype installed for a while, occasional problems when starting a call, either outgoing or incoming. Recently, booting skype at all causes major system lag, often requires a hard resta...

Re: Theory of minisun fusion generators

The theoretical Naked Singularity is a Black hole rotating very quickly, according to some simple searches :P Sebbie, I'm making the same point you are: in a normal explosion/sun, by and large things are moving out from a central point. The model I'm imagining for this mini-star involves two spheres...

Re: Theory of minisun fusion generators

Yes yes, stupidly impractical, I agree with you. Surely if you use /stupidly/ high temp Hydrogen you could still get it to work though? Given the lack of pressure, it would have to be obscenely high, but...in theory? All this discussion is basically just hot air, there are better and easier ways to ...

Re: Theory of minisun fusion generators

So you want to create a source of Gravity, assumedly unaffected by anything else. Add a Hydrogen mix (for pure fusion), and it will fall into the middle. If you manage to get fusion to work before it all collapses, you could in theory keep it self sustaining at a certain size. You would have to keep...

Re: Linux

Yea, fun fact though, things like Rhythmbox all work with Ipods from a fresh boot (or at least they install the right codecs with only a prompt) but anything open source on Windows seems to have real issues with it...which means I've never actually managed to avoid itunes on Windows :S

Re: I/O errors on new HD

Robbie, Yea, that copy everything off and reformat was a last ditch solution, I doubt I can fit everything back onto my old 320Gb...and I only scanned the affected partition, one is still raw and the other is working fine as my boot for windows, I assumed they were ok. aj, I haven't actually tried, ...

Re: I/O errors on new HD

The bad block scan came back completely clean, and it doesn't seem to have smartctl installed, nor is that the apt-get package name...Googling it now, will try and get those results to you soon. *Edit* Installed it, and the output is saved here: http://pastebin.com/FJbF3CbQ To help, the ones you req...

I/O errors on new HD

As the title states, I've been getting issues with copying things to and from one of the partitions in my new 2Tb harddrive. Its currently split into three partitions, one main Windows drive (working fine, 500gb), one currently blank but will be a Linux boot (another 500GB) and the remaining 800 Gig...

Re: Questions on PIC's and connectors

Ok, thanks for that, I think I'll probably go with the USB-TTL if only to see how it does, I'll have to work out how to wire it and what parts to get, but since I haven't actually bought anything yet, that won't be hard. So, now I can look up PySerial on the recieving end, the only thing left is to ...

Questions on PIC's and connectors

My question really is: I know how to play with PIC's, I know how to mess with the PC software side (or at least what to google etc, which is basically the same thing given time) BUT I have no idea how to connect the two. I'm not afraid of using a soldering iron, and I know you can get small LAN or U...

Re: Python Issues

Wow thats a useful place, and I admire the built in search when you stick your topic in...wonder how many questions a day that saves? Using that lovely search function, I worked out that the script was killing itself on those first three lines, where there was no matchobject (since it returned false...

Python Issues

I know quite a few people here have experience with coding, so I thought I'd run this past you. I'm making a simple script to take data from an XML, format it suitably and save it to an rtf. I've gone with python just to play with it, and its beautiful, I've even started getting a hold on regex. I w...
